more than one simultaneous puzzle

By DreamKing, in Mansions of Madness

hello,

i don't know if our group missed it in the rules but what should we do when before a puzzle is finished, the investigators discover another puzzle that uses the same setup piece?

the case in question: in the first story, one of the investigators was trying to open a suitcase in the freezer when the objective was revealed and it said that the investigators needed to escape the house in order to win. the puzzle that opens the exit door used the same setup piece that the puzzle that opened the suitcase (and was still unresolved).

(i know that, in this particular scenario, the investigators should probably just leave the suitcase behind and try to escape the mansion, but i was wondering if this kind of situation appeared in any other stories and what would be the correct course of action?)

Hey,

First: The FAQ says that the image on the Suitcase is wrong and you should follow the text. Just a minor heads up, since it doesn't change the type of lock.
Second: In the rulebook it says that, as long as there aren't enough puzzle pieces to create another puzzle of that type, the puzzle can't be solved. Therefore, yeah, your players would need to solve the suitcase first before having a try at the (much more important) main gate. But there's also a point about "resetting a lock", which is always an option and... I guess I'd let them reset/dismiss the suitcase lock and create the front gate.

Not much sense in penalising players for "not knowing which type of lock the all-important main gate will have next turn".

But, I guess, 100% according to the rules, players are screwed in that case ;)

yes, we noticed of the error on suitcase but since 6a and 6b are the front and back of the same setup piece the problem remains, just like you said.

we can use that rule of don't allowing investigators to try puzzles that need pieces that are still in use on other puzzles, but can you just point me where to find it? at least i can't find it in the puzzle section of the rulebook.

thanks!

It's on page 25, "Component Limitations": "If a player would like to draw additional puzzle pieces,..."
I guess this is connected to "If he HAS to draw puzzle pieces" as well.

And I already spotted an error of mine, "Resetting" a puzzle is no action, it is only possible if a card tells the player to do so.
Still, I'd offer them "discard the suitcase and start again from the start if you want to finish it later". Or at any other lock at any given time.

got it, thanks again!

Puzzle Setup Tile is not a Puzzle Piece. In this case, following Component Limitations section, I would treat setup tiles as Other Tokens and allow temporary use of the same setup tile to solve 2 different puzzles at the same time.

Imho it's just another piece, but I agree with you, this is unclear as of now. I houserule the sh*t out of the "not enough pieces" rules anyway, so...
