Big party

By Yepesnopes, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Hello everyone!

I would ask counsel to those of you who have experience with WFRPG 3rd edition.

I have been playing the 1st and 2nd with the same gang of players and we have always have a lot of fun. I was considering to change to the 3rd edition, mainly because no more material is going to be published for the 2nd edition and I am running out of adventures (and no, I have no time to design my own adventures :( ).

My main concern is that over the years my group has grown to a total of 8 players (plus me the GM). I have been reading on internet that the new edition is mainly thought for a GM + 4 players, since it works with special dice and cards. Is there a way to adapt the game to more players without having to buy extra boxes? Actually I wouldn't like to spend extra 100 dollars for only extra cards and the like.

Thanks

We have 6 players plus me as GM in my group. We actually share cards, even if that is not optimal. You could always print out more of the standard card, of course. The dice are not a problem for us because we just pass them around when we need to roll (we have them in a box). We have the Core Set and the Adventurers Tool-kit which make us able to support 4 players, but as I said, we share the cards.

This has worked for us so far.

After the release of the guides I would say there's nothing stopping you.

definitely get the adventurers toolkit. it has extra careers and another set of the basic cards like dodge etc.

i would be wary of making the jump with that many players with too few components (especially dice), i think you would be setting yourself up for a disappointing fiddly experience.

maybe break the group into 2 and have a couple of sessions with each before bringing them all together. this way you will understand that any dissatisfaction is to do with the game or due to the size of your group. it will also help you as GM learn from your experience especially if you run them through the same adventure.

if it is a hit with the 8 players then perhaps they will feel good enough about the system to invest in it themselves. a players vault costs $30 on amazon, that's less than n $4 investment for each player. perhaps over time if it is successful they will buy another and another improving the experience each time.

Kind of opposite-topic rather than off-topic, but here goesgui%C3%B1o.gif

What is the smallest party size you could use? Would the game work with 1 or 2 player characters?

On topic: I would split the 8 players into two groups I've been a GM for a group of 6 players (in another RPG) and thought that it was too much. I've also been a player in a group of 9 players (when playing a world of darkness campaign), and that was way to much. Combat took forever since you did your thing then had to wait for 8 other PC's + the GM to do stuff before you could act again and it made it boring and killed the excitement of combat all together. Also, the GM had (almost) no time to attend to the players that were a bit shy, so I think those players felt a bit like outsiders.

You can run the same adventures with both groups (if you want to) so preparation won't take any more time. And in my experience the optimal groups are 3-5 players.

I'd say that the smallest I would play with would be 2 players, only one player and a GM would feel strange in my oppinion.

Imo, you can play with 1 player. Keep in mind, that the "only" really important thing extra players bring, is the conversation amongst the player characters, the arguments, etc... Powerwise, you can adjust it accordingly, would suggest a career that is versatile.

Thanks a lot for your imput guys!

I deffinitely cannot split the group in two (I don't have the time to play twice) but I think at least two players will give up the playing sessions soon. I will try to manage the 6 players with the basic core box and player vault.

Thank you all
