Fimir - that gives me hope!

By ffgfan, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

I don't know how many of You readed The Witch's Song but has You noticed that there are Fimir mentioned. Maybe not by the name but You can still read it as You know that's about them. On page 11 You can read:

"... Legend speaks of a race of cyclopean deamons that dwells deep in the mire. According to folklore, when the mists hang low and thick, these deamons creep fro the marsh to enslave the unwary. ..."

This sentence gives me hope that in the future we will see more news about those ancient and forgotten race. Maybe we will see even more forgotten creatures that were in the 1st edition of the game - that would be amazing.

I with you on this. It even sparked my imagination to unreasonable conclusion - there's an odd rumor going around that GW is going to introduce an old bigger friend next for Fantasy Battle. Another rumor tells that there's going to be a new army. Now I realize that these are just rumors and they'll probably only do Ogre Kingdoms. BUT as there's a hint of Fimir in Witch's Song maybe just MAYBE they could be re-launched for FaBa also.

Now THAT would be something!

Well they already have tons and tons of pretty good Ogre kingdom models.. I personally hope they bring back Chaos Dwarves!!!! new models would be sweet..

Having branded zoats, fimir and snotlings back in the day, it would be silly of them (fimir and zoats) not to be re-introduced (hopefully in a very broken way ;)

I honestly doubt GW will ever bring the Fimir back, at least not with all of the wonderful dark material they had previously.

That said, I brought the Fimir into my v3 world and will feature heavily in my modded The Witch's Song.

I'd love some more detail.

These are my favorite baddies to throw at the players in HeroQuest, an absolutely brilliant game.

Dude, HeroQuest! Loved that game! I was wondering what the heck you guys were talking about when saying Fimir, but then all of a sudden it dawned on me, those creatures from HeroQuest! Lol.

Happy day.

And soon, you shall have it! I can, at least, put out the pseudo-creature cards and actions I've made.

Cool, can't wait! Thanks in advance.

As long as they get rid of the **** part of their reproduction I'm cool with the Fimir. I was never cool with that aspect.

I strongly disagree and I like the Fimir reproduction back story, it makes the race truly villainous. Personally The moral sanitizing of the Warhammer setting to grab a larger audience share annoys me to no end... since it defeats the point of the "Dark, Grim Fantasy" When the Warhammer World was established and it was a mostly British thing the humor and setting lore was soooo much better, than they cleaned it up for a larger, younger audience and uptight Americans. gran_risa.gif

I'm with Heretek on this though I understand the point Steel Rabbit has. It's a touche subject as are all that involve sex. But personally I think that they were the selling point of WFRP and TEW for me. I just found it more disturbing in a right way.

I don't know much about the Fimir, which is why I've asked for more details before. This new information about there reproduction is intriguing and seems to fit with the Warhammer as grim dark fantasy world. Does anyone know where I can find more information about these creatures so I can learn about them while not offending the sensibilities of another? On that note Steel Rabbit, as with any gaming material you could just ignore any official 3rd ed Fimir information that comes out or you could just tailor them to suit your comfort level. Hope that doesn't sound patronizing, just bringing it up is all. I'd hate for Jay Little or whoever is in charge of this to the Fimir as a valid choice just because some people dislike them. You can't please everyone and you can't let everyone ruin it for the rest of us.

There's stuff on the Fimir in the v1 corebook, and the v1 adventure Dying of the Light, And some background and an encounter by Graeme Davis (Edge of Night) in "There's a One-Eyed Fellow Hiding to the South of Kammendun" in White dwarf issue 102. The best stuff ever on them though is the fan work Fimir themed Warpstone magazine (issue 26) by Robin Low (occasional poster here). It's one of the great RPG fan works imo, but you'd do well to actually find a copy.

GW has rejected the Fimir as the sort thing they want associated with their teen-friendly game for a good while, I imagine for exactly the reasons Steel Rabbit gives. They're a very dark presence and brilliant fodder for the right sort of game, but not suited to everyone's P&P experience and not really suitable for a teenager's table-top army. For this reason, I can't really see GW ever bringing them back to the WW except the odd veiled hint or cameo. And if they did expunge all the dark from the race, you'd pretty much just end up with Ogres with tails, or something similarly not worthwhile.

The best starting point is Warhammer 1st Ed P218 and 219. Note that Fimir have been removed from the system but are great nasties in any rural campaign. From the information here you can adapt and create your own vision (or should that be version) of them, adding as much or as little of the 1st ed fluff as you want. If you don't have access to the 1st ed core rulebook, or can't buy one, let me know your email and I will give you a summary of the two pages.

Best starting point is Warpstone 25! It's a whole issue about Fimirs for WFRP1 and WFRP2. Best darn thing I've bought in a while for WFRP2.

It's sanitizing this sort of thing that is exactly what gets on my nerves. In the First edition for example, Bretonnia was not a Artheresque high fantasy realm with knights in shining armor.. it was France right before the revolution and instead of noble knights there were Corrupt nobles who trampled peasants under the wheels of their carriages and the hooves of their horses with let them eat cake attitudes...

It sucks imop when everything that makes the Warhammer settings unique and exciting get wiped away for the sake of family friendliness when there are so many other settings that cater to the mass of people who desire that their RPG's be light, sexless and the violence and morality issues cartoonized. Without this stuff Warhammer is just becomes another generic fantasy setting with a different color of paint and Warhammer is poorer for it. There is plenty of product where people can get generic fantasy p&p rpg experience's such as D&D, sad there can't be one rpg on the market that does not cater strictly to the lowest common denominator of role player who desires a game that runs almost akin to Talisman with it's card board cut out heroes and villains.

My issues with GW policies are numerous though so I should stop there! bostezo.gif

Yeah, 25, not 26.

The Fimir are mentioned by name in the 8th edition WFB rulebook from last year. First time they've had a proper mention in more than a decade, as far as I know.

This did, indeed, suck. Which is why they changed Bretonnia from Arthurian high fantasy knights-in-shiny-armour to Arthurian low fantasy knights who trample peasansts under the hooves of their horses. Bretonnia is now one of the grimmest, most depressing parts of the setting.

As for the fimir, I doubt we'll see them again. Every now and then they are mentioned in relation to the cursed marshes, but only as rumour and myth. I think it's just a nod to the first edition and a wink to older players.

I just want it on the record that I don't think GW has "toned-down" their settings for a younger audience (I'm familiar with all the versions and inceptions of Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000), but that isn't what we're discussing in this thread.

GW hasn't gotten rid of Fimir, either. They're in the terrain section of the new 8th edition Warhammer Fantasy rulebook. I think they pop out of bogs and drag you down (to do, Sigmar-knows-what to you I don't know...)

^ Bah! Sorry. I guess I skimmed over the post of the guy above me who already mentioned what I did.

I actually plan to use a variation of the Fimir in a upcoming Dark Heresy campaign.
