Results of the Night Watch tournament in Madrid

All the great houses of Westeros responded to the call of the Lord Commander of the Night Watch. The Others are pushing from the north and threaten the good people of the seven kingdoms. Tha battle has been fought at the feet of the Wall, and only one warrior has risen as the true champion of Westeros.

These are the results of the tournament orginized by the spanish forum in Madrid the 5th-6th March 2011. 6 rounds of swiss followed by a top16. The final has been decided has the best of three games. You can find our forum here: www.guardiadelanoche.com/foro/

Number of players at the tournament: 71 (people from Italy, France, Portugal, Luxembourg and Spain)

Classification:

1. Sato. Martell, Kings of Summer

2. Ser Garras. Stark

3. Humber. Stark, Siege of Winterfell

4. Free. Martell, Kings of Summer

In top 8 there were: 3 Stark, 3 Martell, 2 Lannister

In top 16 there were: 1 Greyjoy, 4 Baratheon, 1 Targaryen, 4 Stark, 2 Lannister, 4 Martell

I have not the complete classification. I will complete the results as soon as the orginizers post them in the spanish forum. I will also post here the winning lists.

About the metagame, I think we have seen Narrow Escape played in many different decks. We can see it in aggro lists to recover from Valar or in martell decks to play again and again the Viper Bannermen. Only one guy has played a Beric Dondarrion list (with neutral house) because, although it is a very competitive deck, here in spain milk of the puppy sees a lot of play.

I'm quite happy with the metagame of the moment. Maybe Greyjoy and Targaryen need some reinforcements, but they are not far behind the rest of houses and they have representants in top 16. The overall impression here in spain is that, after the disappearance of wildling decks, martell has probably taken the first place as the most powerful house, ahead of Lannister. Their ability to draw and their stability make them a very difficult house to play against.

2th list: Ser Garras Stark Deck. Direwolf Style

Plots:
Fury of the wolf
Take them by surprise!
The Minstrel's Muse
The power of blood
Retaliation!
Fear of winter
Valar moghulis

Characters (35):
3x Bolton refugee
3x Hungry mob
3x Carrion bird
3x Direwolf pup
1x Hodor
1x Jeyne Westerling
1x Reek
1x Sansa Stark (kl)
1x Ser Jorah Mormont
1x Old Nan
2x Wolf pack
2x House Tully Septon
3x Guard of Riverrun
1x Varys (kl)
1x Brienne of Tarth
2x Catelyn Stark (low)
1x Northern Cavalierly Flank
1x Eddard Stark (kl)
2x Robb Stark (low)
2x The Blackfish

Events (3):
3x Endless endurance

Attachments (6):
2x Frozen solid
2x Shaggydog
1x Grey Wind
1x Nymeria

Locations (18):
3x Bay of ice
3x Great Keep
3x Narrow Sea
1x Street of steel
1x Street of sisters
2x Nothern fiefdoms
3x Frozen moat
2x Winterfell Kennels

This is a kind of control deck. Ser Garras tries to win the initiative and become the second player, controlling the opponent's challanges through Shaggydog and Grey Wind. Many cheap characters to have good setups and some good draw thanks to winterfell kennels, bay of ice, blackfish, eddard stark and guard of riverrun.

In fact the top 16 was 1 Greyjoy, 3 Baratheon, 1 Targaryen, 4 Stark, 3 Lannister and 4 Martell, but one of the Lannister players had to leave just after the swiss, so the 17th player (Baratheon) played instead.

Hello there everyone!!

So here goes a little report about the BLAST that has been the Nightswatch tournament 2011 here in Madrid!!
First of all, we all have to thank the organization and collaborators that made this thing possible: it was a tournament made by and for fans, and never in our wildest dreams we would have thought of… 74 players!! Thank you to all the people that participated, especially those coming from abroad: France, Italy and Luxembourg. It has been great to have you here guys!!!

So, first day: Saturday 5th March.
For this day was planned the first part of the joust tournament: 6 rounds swiss + eight finals of the TOP 16. Everything began at 9 o’clock, were everybody gathered in the door of Padis (our playing location) to salute the players of the tournament! It was great to see again so many people from Stahleck.

varios032.jpg

The day got one really well dispite the large number of players. Everyone had a great time, with epic battles and cruel fighting!
At last, around 19 hours, the TOP 16 was decided.

varios034.jpg

And the first round of the top was played; only 8 players survived!

varios044.jpg

After TOP 16 was announced, alternative tournaments took place: The War of the 6 kings, a tournament were no particular players were the winners, it was the whole house. Southron players got Martell house to the top!
After a hard day of playing, the participants gathered in different groups to enjoy Madrid’s nightlife… Those pics can´t be posted! xD

Second day: Sunday 6th March.
In the morning the quarterfinals, semifinals and a best of three games final took place. A Martell deck and a Stark/wolves deck fought for the title of best contender, with final victory for Sato, 2009 European champion! Congratulations!!!

At the same time, Melee tournament started, with 2 rounds + final. The final was played in the evening, with the result of a winner Sertor and his Baratheon deck! Congratulations!
In the evening also took place the suicidal tournament, and thoughout all the day, the costume contest, were our gorgeous Thaya/Cersei was acclaimed as the queen of beauty! She made all of it herself!

varios109.jpg

We hope that everyone had a great great time, and for the next time it would be great to have some American players as well!!

Thanks sooo much for the reports, guys. Sounds like an awesome tourney.

Metagame Analysis

Here you have some statistic about the tournament made by Stukov in his blog ( ciudadeladeantigua.blogspot.com/ ). We can see two columns with information about the participation of each house in the whole tournament and two more columns about the top 16. We count 70 players cause the 71th arrived on delay and was not taken into account in this analysis.

204DA733E5334D79FFD52A4D79FF84.jpg

We can check the low participation of Targaryen and Greyjoy players and the popularity of Baratehon and Stark. We see, also, the good performance of martell house, wich is the fourth house in number of players but one of the most represented in top 16, and they won the tournament.

Although I have not official stats, I can say that Kings of Summer has been played a lot. In the actual meta we don't see many winter decks and King of Summer provides us with a good draw engine at a minimum risk.

Thank you very much for posting! Sounds/look like it was a great event!

the third place -- player did he lose to the finalist stark deck or the first place martell deck in the semi-final round? how did his deck do over the course of the tournament against martell? he loaded his deck up with a lot of anti-martell hate, and i'd like to know exactly how that worked for him...

This Stark list lost in semifinals against the winner martell deck played by Sato. However, he defeated Stukov in the swiss, one of the other great martell players in Spain. I have asked Humber for further details in the spanish forum, but he doesn't connect too often. I know he has tested a lot this list against martell, and the 3x Hand's Judgement and 2xBrienne help him a lot. He has 3 plots with 4 income and the Fury, along with a decent number of locations, so I guess he can easily save one dragon to pay for the judgement.

Humber has answered:

"At the first time, the first change was for the problem against lannister. So I tried with hand judgment, and the results were great. I usually win against lannister, because of the judgments or the to be a wolf, and lot of unic characters to deal with Toll Gate. But martell appeared, so I had to improve my deck to win against the best house.

So I put in my deck a lot of characters with intrigue icon, like craster, or sansa, for me to prevent the game of civase, 2x Briennes and the judgment to prevent burning sand. And Red wedding becuause of Martell's ladies. The results are so great, but, what happenned with BRUTAL drawing that house martell has got?? Rule by decree, but it insn't enough, I think, I must think about something more useful. There is a chararacter that in dominance let all players with 4 cards in hand (Ser Preston Greenfield), i'm going to try with him. And another solution maybe is put in the deck a white raven, for the decks with summer agenda, with the to be a wolf, you can search, and then you can put in the deck samwell tarly too, for draw more. Try so ^^
The rest of martell, turbo-viper, is a problem in my deck, i think milk of the poppy, but I dont know if is enough, im going to try it.

I hope I have solved all the questions about my deck against martell and the following changes in my deck to improve it ^^"

Once upon a time, a group of European LCG players gathered to bravely fight each other for the Throne of Stahleck. But despite their bravery and skill only one player stood victorious at the battle's end; a player named Gualdo claimed the Crown for Italy. Desiring another chance to succeed and wrest victory for themselves and their nations, the other European LCG players, restless in their defeat, traveled to the center of the Spanish Kingdom, Madrid, to fight for glory anew. These 72 players, armed with sword and shield, stood ready and waiting, for the greatest A Game of Thrones event of their time was about to begin.

The Tourney Begins

3465468.jpg

On Saturday, March 5th, the first day of battle, two tournaments were played. Every participant found their morning occupied with six fierce round of Joust, luckily ending just in time for the hungry opponents to renew their energy with a hearty lunch. While they feasted, the judges decided the top 16. The players not included in the top 16 were still able to defend their house's honor in a second Joust tournament: The War of the Six Kings. In this tournament players could not fight other players who shared their house. After the dust cleared, House Martell stood victorious, winning The War of the Six Kings tournament.

The top 16 players in the main Joust tournament, meanwhile continued their battles, clashing against each other in fiery rivalry until their numbers were halved. When the top 8 player were declared, they were also granted a brief respite; the final battles would continue the next day. Lo, they would not admit it aloud, the strong warriors welcomed the time to relax. In the morning they could continue to crush their enemies, or die trying.

Tension filled the morning air on Sunday, March 6th. With House Martell having claimed the Joust the day before, players began fighting in a Melee tournament. The top 8 battles and the Melee confrontations were so exhilarating that many players refrained from continuing themselves in order to observe them. The morning finished with five players remaining in the Melee tournament, awaiting the last fight to the death. In the afternoon, the Melee tournament finished after several more hours of intense play. In the end, it was House Baratheon that stepped forward to claim its rightful throne.

Players were able to participate and observe two additional tournaments: the Suicidal CCG and the Mysterious Bag tournament.
The Suicidal CCG had players beginning with 2 CCG booster pacs and 3 standard plot cards. If a player won a game they received their opponent's cards, were able to add 10 more cards to their own deck, and add an additional plot card to their plot deck.
The Mysterious Bag tournament involved competitors attempting to play their best with a random deck that had been designed by someone else. Every deck included instructions and featured custom cards designed by some of the “Guardia de la Noche” forum members.

The Best House

Every house of Westeros was represented in the top 16. However, only three houses made it to the top 8. Houses Baratheon, Targaryen, and Greyjoy were bested by Houses Lannister, Martell, and Stark in an assertion of strength and wits.

Stark vs Martell
Winner: Martell

Sato, the former winner of the Stahleck 2009 tournament was the winner. After a year and a half, House Martell reclaimed the throne and demonstrated their power and fearlessness. Who will be strong enough to take it from them next time?

Bonds of Friendship

04367.jpg

Many of the players who withdrew from battle did so in order to defend their house's honor. The battlefield was a rich tapestry of players from Spain, Italy, France, and Luxemburg. Unfortunately, Polish and Portuguese players were unable to attend, but are expected for the next tournament.

The atmosphere was very friendly and everyone who attended had a wonderful time. We played, of course, but also shared tips and strategies. We ate, of course, but also talked and drank, partying as brothers. These experiences united us all, despite the distance between our countries. Overall, it was both a successful and a joyous weekend during which we made many new friends, with whom we hope to once again challenge on the fields of war, in battles to come.
