Please help out a new Descent fan

By valoren, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I've seen a few other posts from new players, so I'll add a few questions of my own. I played my first game the other night and had a blast, but all the players are new and we argued over the rules quite a bit. Here are some of our questions:

I just have the main Descent: Journeys into the Dark set

1) do players get Attack of Opportunity? A lot of board games do this, but i see nothing about it in the rule book. For example, as Overlord, if i move one of my monsters past a hero to get to another hero, does that first hero get an attack of opportunity against me? Several of the new players argue for this, but i see nothing in the rule book.

2) As overlord, if i kill a hero, each hero playing loses some conquest tokens? (not just the one that dies)

3) As overlord, do i get threat tokens for rolling 2 surges on an attack even if i miss?

4) As overlord, when can you use dark relics?

5) Its prob obvious by now i played the overlord role, hehe. I found basically most of the monsters pretty weak against the heroes except for the beastman and the final boss type mobs (for quest I). Other than the overlord cards, am i missing something as far as ways to upgrade my monsters in game play? it seems the heros just get stronger and stronger...and only the beastmen have decent damage from die rolls to damage the heroes.

1) There is an Order that can be placed called "Guard" (page 14 of the rulebook). If they place a Guard, they may make one interrupt attack against a monster during the OL's turn. Apart from that, there is no such thing as an "Attack of Opportunity" in Descent for monsters moving past the Heroes. There is no game rules basis for their argument.

2) Conquest tokens are held in collective of the 4 players (see page 4 under Collect Conquest Tokens). Its not each one has (for example) 5 Conquest Tokens to start, they collectively have 5. So if you kill a 3 Conquest Hero, the group loses 3 Conquest.

3) No. On page 5 of the FAQ (on the website's support page)

Q: Under what circumstances can the overlord receive threat for rolling surges on an attack roll?

A: The overlord may spend two surges on each attack roll to gain one threat. He may do this on any attack that hits a hero . This represents a change from previous FAQ rulings on this subject.

4) I didn't think Dark Relics came in the base set? To my recollection, you have to have bought the Dark Relics card with Treachery and then play it when the Heroes receive treasure from a chest to swap out the Dark Relic of your choice.

5) In the first quest, that's pretty much the way it goes. The Master Beastman are key, as they give command. Make sure you check to see if you have the updated monster cards (check the FAQ) and that you use the correct stats (for a game with 4 Heroes , use the side with 5 up in the corner). The first few Quests are pretty much designed for the OL to lose, but keep working on it. Traps and Beatmen War Parties are your best weapons.
