Warped Tiles?

By Dr. Nocturne, in Mansions of Madness

Just got my game this week. FINALLY! Love it a lot but noticed that my tiles are already starting to warp and bend. Not too drastic but really annoying. I keep the game perfectly fitted into the box so I know I'm not putting pressure on the tiles in odd areas.

Is this a problem for anyone else? Does anyone know if this is something I can just have replaced by FFG?

Thanks.

Seconded. We played our first game last night and the Foyer (largest tile) is warped already. The game itself is great, but I agree: components that come out of the box warped are pretty annoying.

As more people get the Game the warping issue has come up ,so far it's described as minor so nowhere near as bad as the now infamous Betrayal at House on the Hill. Some posters have reported no warping others that the warping went away,so it could be the climate conditions?

I know that game boards have a tendency to warp around my apartment if I leave them lying around in the open, but as long as I keep everything in the box (even if it's not packed tight) it seems to be fine. I don't know if this wold have bearing on any of you, but it seems like sometimes boards can be sensitive to even such tiny variations of atmosphere as inside vs outside a bigger box.

Thanks for the replies you guys. Yeah at least its not as bad as Betrayal. (sigh) Is there an easy fix for this? Heavy press or something? Anyone have any home remedies?

They heavy book thing seem to work.

Put some packs of silica gel in your gamebox.

The humidity seems to affect the warping of any cardboard tiles I have. Try to play in a well temped room, and continue to play in similar areas. Once you flux temperatures in different gaming environments, it may warp board tiles.

Sounds great! I'll give those methods a try. Best of luck to the others with the same situation.

I unpacked to review a week ago, put all the tiles under books to keep them flat, took them out today to set up a game and see if I had rules right etc., within a couple of hours foyer was warping slightly and within 4 hours several tiles warped.

This is disappointing, I've purchased similar products (e.g., WOTC's dungeon tiles) and never found that issue with those.

Among other problems with this game my boards have warped too, but only slightly, not a big problem for me, but what I am concerned with, and this may be the root cause of the warping, is that the laminating of the cardboard stock on all the pieces is poor.

some of the corners and edges are splaying apart already with my set, and I've been very careful since i knew about the warping from the preview event posts.

It looks as if the glue used to laminate together the sheerts of carboard was poor or not applied correctly. This is what might be causing the warping.

Now if only they'd done the boards the same as the Tide of Iron ones...

I had placed all my Board Tiles under heavy books, although only 1 tile seemed to have just a slight warp.I set up Friday night the Mansion for our first game Saturday.Saturday morning I noticed the Foyer and about 3 other Tiles were slighty warped, nothing that effected play and I don't think anyone noticed (or at least didn't comment on).We played a couple of turns (with a lot of rule checking) and will continue today (Sunday-afternoon).

I looked at the Tiles this morning and most have flattened out,the Foyer is still a tad warped. This really isn't bad but I think many of us are hyper aware of the problem ,first from the Hill House Game(those Tile stack pics were brutal) and then from the FFG Video.I really think we're all over reacting due to the buzz about it.We all wanted this Game to be perfect (and I understand for the price,it should be)so basically minor things get rather blown up.

For anyone who isn't yet aware, WotC will send replacement tiles (in fact replacements of ALL cardboard bits) for Betrayal at House on the Hill. I emailed them a while ago with complaints about the warped board, and they sent me a nice letter of apology and new kit in the mail. I know that FFG's customer service is legendary as well.

Unpacked on thursday, played today for the first time.

MINOR warping on the foyer and some other larger tiles, but nothing really bad. You can't spin them around, they don't overlap with neighbouring pieces, they're just "not flat".

Central europe here, about +10°C outside, more inside of course ;)

I am getting anywhere between 5-10mm of warping on the tiles (corners lifting from table), the Foyer tile being the most extreme.

The warping is consistent in that it is only the corners being affected thus creating what could only be described as a "bowl shape" once the tiles finished warping.

I am led to beleive that this is environemtnal since they always curl away from the table top no matter which side is being laid on the table.

The warping subsides after being weighted down with heavy objects but resumes when they are placed into play again.

think I will give this game some time to see if they reach a point of stability withn the environemnt that I play them in before complaining just to rule out if it is defective materials or just materials that are more sensitive than others in this type of humidity (or lack thereof).

In my case warping is quite noticeable – it’s impossible to fit the room together so they won’t overlap, and some of them turn around when touched.

the warping must be humidity based. I live in Denver CO and so far my tiles show absolutely no warping. I'm taking the game with me to NC next week which has high humidity, will be an interesting experiment. I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

10 ways to avoid getting your tiles warped

1) Don’t wash them in a washing machine, if dirty apply a damp cloth, don’t use hot water.
2) Keep them out of direct sunlight
3) Don’t play the game in a sauna or near any areas that produce dampness like kitchen, bathrooms etc.
4) Store the game in a dark cool area, preferable closet
5) Keep the game away from close proximity to ovens and other heating devices.
6) When playing make sure you air the room often to let out body moisture
7) Keep the playing area around 68 to 78 degrees of Fahrenheit.
8) In hot conditions use a Silicia gel bags to control humidify. Place one or two bags inside box. Some cat litters do the same, avoid used cat litter.
9) Keep the game away from drafty areas like open windows, air-coolers etc.
10) Apply pressure to the tiles before storing the game.
11) Keep the game away from tsunamis and other fast moving waters.

Okay I did some surfing arround this, apperantly this is a huge concern for tarot users, as most of their ideas made it into my list. At first it was all about sprinkling sea salt, or bath them in moonlight. But that was for a whole other kind of "cleansing and protection". But why not? I am open minded so here's my last advice:

12) sprinkle the tiles once a month with sea salt, preferable arround full moon. For additional effect put a small amethyst crystal on top of tiles, before storing the game.

ps: I still haven't got the game. llorando.gif

Ha ha ha ha, this is great.

I haven't had any problems with warping. My game arrived yesterday... I felt your pain Mal, hold steady! It's completely worth the wait.

"Store the tiles in a pyramidal silver cage."

"Don't play the game over underground watercourses or other places with bad feng shui."

"Don't even dare to play the game on a Friday the 13th!"

Great post!

Well, my tiles are fine, but the table is warped. ;-)
