I've picked up the Core Set, and have been trying to decide which way to go next. While I realize that buying a second core would give me a good base to start with I feel that I should spread out a little. Right now my options are I can pick up the entire dreamlands APs decently cheap at a local game store, pick up Secrets of Arkham, or add in the eighth faction and buy the Silver Twilight box set.

I guess what I am asking is what would be the better buy?

If you can afford it, my personal opinion would be to get another core set so that you have two of each basic card, and to get Secrets of Arkham as it's a very good buy. Then start looking at the asykum packs.

I would wait to buy any of the Dreamlands AP cycle as they are being rereleased with 3 of each card per box. The newly rereleased APs (Thing from the Shore and The Horror Beneath the Surface? Don't remember exactly) would be good pickups, and I feel as though you'd do just as well to pick up either SoA or OotST if you want a Deluxe Expansion. If you ever plan to do some semi-serious to competitive deck building, you're eventually going to pick up everything, including 3 core sets and at least 2 SoAs (I have 3. Yay for Seekers of Mystery!). It's just a matter of what you prefer to do. Casually... eh, pick up whatever makes sense - which is anything but the old 40 card APs - in whatever order you like.

I would start by buying the two mini-Core sets: Secrets of Arkham and Order of the Silver Twilight.

Welcome! Blindfolded, definitely. Left handed if possible. Eight factions at once. That's six of each faction and two neutrals, Country Store for sure. Use raisins for success tokens and don't eat for a week. Buy black border cards and bleach them, carefully. Sleeves. Now you'll definitely want sleeves. It's winter. You wear a tank top, you get cold. I prefer wool or fleece. All cost three cards expire next month.

Shoes, I want just a LITTLE bit of whatever you're on.

How much time have you spent with Hauster?

Never met Hauster, German right? I know a Hoasture, seats tables at Caffe Grecco. Then there's the Hastork, delivering insane babies. Hasturky sings Thanksgiving in Carcosa, a seasonal classic. But I digress. Basically. You must buy more cards. The cultists tell me it must be so. More cards. Yes master.

I have to agree with the Secrets of Arkham and Silver Twilight suggestions first.

The core set has a really good group of cards for starting out (and just throwing 2 decks together to teach people). The Secrets of Arkham expansion will give you a larger selection, and Silver Twilight introduces the new faction...all great steps.

FFG has started repackaging a lot of the older Asylum Packs, so now you get 3 of every card which is really cool. I'd hold off buying older Asylum Packs because of this. When you get extra $ start with the packs that have 3 copies of each card. You can tell which these are when you look at the price, its slightly higher then the old packs.

Consider the play group in your area. If you have or find a solid group, or plan on traveling to tourneys, then consider 3 copies of the core set.

Thats just my opinion.
