Man, I can't for the life of me find how to calculate Defense. Is it just the defense value of the armor or do characters have an innate defense value that is added to armor defense value?
How is defense value derived? Just Armor?
Characters don't have an innate defense value (i.e. misfortune die added to an opponent's attack dice pool). Defense comes from armor, shields, and certain action cards (such as block, dodge, guarded position, etc...).
Characters do have an innate soak value. This is their Toughness score.
I hope that helped!
I agree with above but i use the optional opposed rule
i.e. less the half 0 challenge die, less than 1 challenge die, same 2 chal,3 if higher , 4 if more than dubble,, plus 1 misfortune for each traned skill

Technically, none of those are Defense value, though.
Dont forget to include defense misc Dice for such things as Cover, and situational modifiers. When my players are getting swung att it sounds like a gabbering auction going on with all the different attempts of me adding black dice.. "what about a black dice because We are on an elevated plane and i have a height advantage? what about a black dice because i hit him with 2 crits in the last 2 attacks i did ? and what about a black dice because its my birthday and i really dont want to die" (of course just because they ask the DM doesnt mean i will automatically say yes, but it keeps the players involved in having this "haggling for fortune/misfortune" dice mechanic wich i like alot.
