What about elf mages??

By Yamusha, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Hi,

Do you know if are there going to be elf mages?? or are they too powerful to be PC??

Eventually they should add them, but only if they intend to really up the epic-ness. These mages are super powerful so they'd have to be rank 4 at the minimum.

There is another option for including an elf wizard that wouldn't break the bank, so to speak.

In Warhammer Quest, one of the character pack expansions was the Elf Ranger. Now, the Elf Ranger was a hybrid character who could specialize in being either an Elf Ranger-Knight or an Elf Ranger-Mage. The former focused on combat and survival skills, while the latter had limited access to "High Elf" magic (it wasn't exactly called that, but WHQ was more of a boardgame than a true RPG). Basically, an Elf Ranger was your typical fighter-magic-user multi-class character from that, um, other fantasy RPG people play.

So, that would be one way to introduce an elven spell-casting career at rank 1 (both High and Wood Elf). I'm sure there are others. Any ideas?

I would imagine you could play them functionally like Order Wizards. They would just be young elves. I'm not extremely familiar with Warhammer fluff but I figured the reason they could work High Magic was because they had the sufficient natural lifespans to study and perfect it.

Until they were of sufficient age, maybe their talent is more in line with similar aged Order Wizards. I could see how 100+ year old elven wizards would begin to become much more powerful than they're younger human peers as they began to reach into the more complex workings of High Magic.

I posted an idea once for an optional rule allowing wizards to choose spells from a different order at each new rank. Seems like a good way for Elf wizards to wield a wider variety of spells than human wizards and still make them playable. To be honest I'm not familiar with why elf magic has to be so much more powerful than human magic. It seems to me looking back at the few first edition books that I have (and my complete collection of 2nd edition as well) this game has had quite a few thematic changes. I mean in 1st ed Sigmar was a lesser god. Magic wise there were illusionists, elementalist, druids all along with the regular order wizards we still have. Not to mention there used to be gnomes too. Lastly elves were playable as wizards in both 1st and 2nd edition. So I say let elves use magic, even if it doesn't fit with whatever it is that says elf magic is too powerful (what, is that from the miniatures game or something?). Also maybe elf magic isn't all powerful, perhaps it is just different. How about giving them there own spell cards just like the skaven and goblins. It seems to me elf wizards cannot start out wielding world altering spells right off so they should start at rank 1 with basic spells and work there way up.

There probably will be elf-mages, but until then I thought that the witch and warlock careers work quite well since they can wield several winds of magic.
Should be easy enough just disallowing the hedge magic spells and maybe tweak the skill set and the drawbacks of the witch/warlock to better fit the elf mages. As previously mentioned I see elf mage PC's as young apprentices in the beginning of their training, as such they won't be super-mega-over powered but have access to all the winds.

Hi

thanks for your message. Could you tell me where is your post about the optional rule allowing wizards to choose spells from a different order at each new rank? could you copy it here please? Maybe I could use it

thanks

Hi

any of you knows how to find a file named CareerApprenticeMage.zip that was posted in these forums some time ago?

It seems that this file include some kind of adaptation for an elf mage career but the link is broken... :P

thanks for your help

As k7e9 said, I think a minimal alteration to the Witch/Warlock career (from Witch's Song) would actually work pretty well for a very basic/apprentice Elven mage career.
