Some Questions..

By Tomoka, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Being new to Arkham Horror, I thought it best to ask a few rule clarifications on some issues I came up with while playing. If these questions are answered in other posts, my apologies; didn't really find anything doing a search.

Anyways, here are my questions:

1. In the vanilla Arkham Horror (revised print), Page 24 states:

"Terror Level: 10 ---> Arkham is overrun (no monster limit and add one doom token)"

For the adding of one doom token, do you add one when the track actually lands on 10, or only when the Terror Track extends BEYOND the 10? Previous pages mention the latter, but nothing about the former.

2. In Dunwhich Expansion, Tasks/Missions are clarified on page 5, where 2 different triggering conditions (if you can call them that) are stated for Tasks:

In the sidebar box: "Had Jim been working on a Task instead of a Mission, he would not have needed to make a sacrifice at each location. Instead, merely being present in the location during the Upkeep Phase would have sufficed."

Under the Paragraph describing Tasks/Missions: "For Tasks, merely spending an Arkham Encounter Phase in the listed area is enough to complete each step."

These 2 say Tasks may be rewarded at 2 different Phases. Can I collect my Task before I encounter, immediately after, or on my next turn during Upkeep?

Thanks again for the help!

  1. In 1st edition, you add one when the terror level reached 10. In the revised 2nd edition, you added one when it exceeds 10. So the "exceeds" way seems to be the most recent version. But I currently do both because, why not?
  2. Right. You've picked up on the key phrase. In my opinion they were designed to operate exactly the same, so you would score the Task if you're in the same space during the Upkeep. However, Missions are essentially rituals so maybe the "Upkeep" part was meant to indicate that it takes time to perform the ritual. It is possible that the last step in a Task is merely to arrive at your destination with the key information, which takes much less time.

In short: play it your way. There seems to be no agreed-upon answer.

I have never had the Terror Level go that high. On that basis, I would say to add one when it reaches 10. It would happen so rarely that I would punish myself with a doom token!

If you are finding it happens relatively often in your games then perhaps it is better to only add a doom token when you exceed 10.

That seems to be the case in many of my games, perhaps because we as a team are just unfortunate to draw rumor cards that force the terror level up to 10 in a matter of a few turns, or we just keep hitting surges at terrible times. I guess still being new has that feel, yet adding a token at ten I suppose feels appropriate.
