Brand new player questions

By davhey, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Just got the starter game and ran through a few 1-on-1s to test it. Lots of fun but two questions:

1. Can the plot cards be moved to other House's decks?

2. Is House Stark overpowered in this set? They seem to clobber in the games we've played.

Thanks!

1) yes

2) It does lean that way alittle. Take the Valar Morghulis out of Starks plot deck and give it to the other house. I've found this helps even it out alittle bit.

1) Ingame not without an special ability of a card, the only example i know of is Varys. If you meant while building decks of course.

2) House Stark is strong but that's because most people look at the miltary aspect first. If you can last 7 turns their obliged to Valar and if you got card advantage(due to intrigue or draw) you'll be better of most of the time. Alot of people will argue to remove Valar from Stark because the other houses could need the board reset more but it didn't play the core set decks much.

Every deck has it's strength and weaknesses though

Targaryen: Very versatile, double resource system though, need gold and influence, so needs more time to set up, does have some claim soaks (like aemon, viserys and bones of a child). On average low power on units but some stealth

Baratheon: Good at winning, best powergrabers due to their renown, bit weak on intrigue so their decks

Stark: Good at killing, High Power Chars, some Deadly, lots of mil and power, very weak on intrigue though.

Lannister: Good in card advantage, due to additional draw and their strong intrigue, lacks some military but has lots of useful events to intervene in battles.

Unless a plot specifically states "House X only," it can be played in any House.

I had a similar question about Stark over at boardgamegeek.com

javascript:void(0);/*1299015685812*/ (Why oh why does this board screw my links up is beyond me but oh well, the link itself works I believe)

Long story short, Stark's deck is fast in the core game. They specialize in kicking butt in military challenges. They're one of the few decks that doesn't specifically *need* a familiarization with to be effective.

You really need to look through the other decks and study the cards that they consist of. Unlike Magic, playing a deck in this game cold is inefficient, because there's so much synergy, and many cards let you pull resources out of your deck at will. Knowing what to pull and when is vital to making the game work at this stage. There's fairly easy and simple ways of end-running around Stark's military grinding machine even in the core game, and you need to look into how to lose military challenges as cheaply as possible without actually losing characters. Once you figure out how to do that (feeding someone who can't be killed into the stark military maw), you can start focusing on intrigue or power challenges, which are not Stark's strong points (especially intrigue, which has the double-whammy of depriving your opponent of precious cards in his hand due to how fast Stark runs).

Part of Stark's power is that people look at the game similar to Magic. It's not. It's common to figure out ways to lose/ignore/prevent challenges and end up benefiting from it more than if you had won the challenge. Think about ways to actually lock down and make Stark's military abilities a non-issue. Focus on kneeling abilities, the ability to prevent death in a military challenge, and ways to circumvent direct kill cards. The combos are in there. Once you eliminate the penalty for losing a military challenge, the battleground has shifted away from favoring Stark severely.

A quick howto name your links:

  1. Press "Insert/Edit Link" in the editor.
  2. Put the URL in the URL field
  3. Go to the "Advanced" tab
  4. Under "Name" put the link text
  5. Press OK

And that's it! Then you can link stuff like Anguy the Archer . It'll look a little strange when you enter it in, and I have no idea what the other fields are for, but this should be sufficient. Sometimes, this doesn't work, and I have to edit the link text manually. Good luck. :)
