?Help? Some Questions with a newcomer from China.

By ufoboys433, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

i have played this game over half of a year and met some questions recently...Help!Help!!Help!!!gran_risa.gif

1. How to explain the plot "Wildfire Assault" encounters "The Power of Blood"?

ie,i control 3 Noble characters and 3 non-Noble characters, can i choose the latter (3 non-N characters) to let the 6 characters still be in play?

i think the 3 Noble characters must be chosen...

2.About the Lannister location "Lion Gate". If i discard a power from a card and that card is a Noble character, may "Eddard Stark" (King's Landing) use his ability to cancel the triggered effect that the location(Lion Gate) "give that card a trait of your choice"?

i don't think the "Lion Gate" chooses a Noble character,it does not "choose". So it can't be cancelled by Eddard's ability.

3.there is a duplicate on the "Tyrion Lannister", can i discard the duplicate to save "Tyrion Lannister"(King's Landing) ,when "Sister of Truth" use its ability to let "Tyrion Lannister" return to Shadows ?

4.i put "Qyburn" into play with a plot and i have already put another "Qyburn" into Shadows at previous turn. can i trigered his ablilty when it come out of Shadows.

Thx.

not need to be chosen. In the situation you describe, a player who is paying attention will keep all 6 characters just as you have chosen - choose the 3 non-Noble to live, then watch the "kill" effect from the plot fail on the Nobles.

Here is the long version of the explanation, with background:

  1. The word "cannot" is absolute. When a card "cannot be killed," that's pretty much what it means; the card cannot be removed from play by a "kill" effect.
  2. In addition to not being able to be removed from play by the "kill" effect, a "cannot be killed" character cannot be chosen as the target of a kill effect.
  3. #2 means that other characters cannot "hide" behind the CBK character. If an effect says "choose and kill a character," you are not allowed to choose the CBK character, and let it survive the kill. You must choose a character that is not CBK, if possible.

All that usually makes sense. #3, though, is usually the reason that people think they'd have to choose the Noble characters in your Power of Blood/Wildfire example. You cannot "choose" the CBK character to die. What people usually miss is that with Wildfire, you are not choosing characters to die. You are choosing them, then killing the rest. The rules on "cannot" only prevent you from choosing the CBK character when the effect is "choose and kill." There is nothing forcing you to make the CBK character avoid the kill when the effect is "choose, and kill the guys not chosen."

The easier way to look at it is probably this: For the characters not chosen when Wildfire is revealed, the plot is essentially the same as Valar Morghulis. There's no doubt that the Noble survives in the Power of Blood/Valar combination, right?

i don't think the "Lion Gate" chooses a Noble character,it does not "choose". So it can't be cancelled by Eddard's ability.

This is simply a definition in the game. It turns out that the important word in Eddard's cancel is "target," not "chosen." For an effect to have a "target" in this game, the word "choose" must appear in the effect. If it does not, there is no "target" by definition, even if the effect is singling out a character to act upon by other means. Since Lion's Gate does not use the word "choose," there is no "target," so the play restrictions for Eddard's effect ("...that was chosen as the only target...") are not met - for either the word "chosen" or "target."
