Vox Caster

By Headhanger, in Dark Heresy

I was just browsing the 'net and found this old photograph.

Is it me or does this scream "Vox Caster" to you? Of course, it should be a backpack rather than a suitcase, and include an earphone and microphone rather than a telephone-like headset; but I can imagine a guild representative carrying around a briefcase vox caster (or getting a lackey to carry it for him), a techpriest having something like this as part of his body's augmentation, or even something like this being a pannier on a hiveworld motorcycle.

By the way, this was one of the early "mobile phones" if you were wondering. The plaque reads "Briefcase Cellular Telephone".

You mean like this ? (German ww2 backpack radio, including warning "Enemy is listening " [Feind hört mit] on the right side)

Hows this for a master vox?

Now this would make a particularly cool CPU mod.

Though I do agree it looks very much like it would come out of DH.

We haven't come very far since ww2 in terms of radios - http://www.olive-drab.com/od_electronics_sincgars_m.php

I'm going to have to totaly disagree. I have been "fortunate" enough to use the PRC-77 and the SINCGARS. The "pric" is big, heavy, and has a tendancy not to be able to work when you try to call someone about 200m away. The SINCGARS is smaller, lighter, plus it has the ablity to "channel hop" up to 100 freguences a second to keep people from listening. And the photo you have is the old SINCGARS that hasn't been fielded since the early 1980s.

LV 217

This is old Finnish army communication device, called LV 217. I use this as portable vox caster in my games.

A prop by Nimba Creations

This is what I believe to be a vox caster prop made by Nimba Creations, the UK special effects production company that has made several props, costumes, and puppets for Games Workshop over the years.

It looks like one of the comm units used in the cutsceens for the 40K "Final Liberation" game made by Bright Light Studios.

It's a shame that GW didn't let them go ahead and make more live action 40K related media. Granted the CGI they used wasn't the greatest (even for the time considering B5 outclassed everyone in the non-film industy with that) however the physical props, costuming, and related items were rather spot on and well done. The level of stuff developed by BLS would have allowed them to easily make a 40k TV series, so long as they could get good scripts, cast, and staff. One of those sad things that GW sorely missed their chance at doing when it could have generated great interest. One could always hope that now with better CGI, a more connective propmakers community, and the success of independent productions that they may reconsider.....sadly with the whole Damnatus debacle this will be a tough sell to many.

I believe it is a bit too large and cumbersome for a master vox, but I think it is just right for the vox room of a planetary garrison.
