Guy maybe interested in beginning playing, need some answers

By TheSon, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

So hi, I'm Canadian and I might start playing this RPG since I've always like the warhammer universe, even though I never played a game about it (except for warhammer online). The only other RPG I've played are DnD 3.5 and 4.0 and I was wondering how character creation, interaction and combat worked in the system. Also, what kind of character I could create, what kind of action I can take, and also how character progression work. Thanks for your answers

Welcome! well this game has a bunch of things it does very different than in D&D,

First off character creation- There are no classes as per D&D in it's place are careers so instead of a Fighter you might play a Troll Slayer or Soldier, instead of a cleric you might play an initiate and so on... careers are really not as hamstringing as classes are so if you end up a Rat catcher it's not such a bad deal since the skills are very diverse but limited to it's most basic action so Weapon skill is you melee skill, Education is you knowledge skill, Athletics is you jump, doge etc skill and so on, except for a few advanced skills most skills can be bought directly with xp regardless of career though you spend a bit more xp if the skill lies outside your career skill list. You also do not stay in any one career indefinitely so you will eventually have the ability to move into another career with the skill sub set you might want.

Character Progression works much differently then in D&S as well and instead of increasing a level, characters use XP to buy advances in their current career and when they have completed the career track enter into another career for a variable amount of XP so it's possible to go from a Rat Catcher to a Soldier to Scout for example.. their is no set career progression but there are benefits to following complimentary careers instead of ones that are less compatible such as from a student to a bounty hunter.

Second- The game uses a Dice pool as it's core mechanic so you roll a set number of good dice or bad dice depending on the circumstance and your ability scores instead of say just a D20, this allows for various outcomes and is a vast improvment over strict hit or miss rolls, so you can succeed with a possible complications (Delay in the action for example)

Third- The game uses action cards so a player can buy with XP set actions such as rapid fire for example and gain the benefits of using a dedicated action card or simply create their own stunts that are more complicated to do than dedicated action cards but can cover nearly any possible action a player might want to preform..

thx a lot for these informations! Could you tell me more about the playable career and character races avaible?

You might want to check my blog I started a week ago to introduce WFRP to new players.

Howdy fellow Canuck.

There are a "whack" of careers. If you go to the support page and download the component list for core rules, you will see a list of career sheets.

You can also see things like the demo adventure with sample characters:

For playable races, the core set has:

Human (Reiklander, if going by previous editions, other provincial backgrounds/nationalities of human will have slightly different features); Dwarf; Wood Elf; High Elf.

We can probably expect to see Halflings some day though no annoucement about that.

Careers are not as "definining/limiting" as a class in D&D. While in D&D "maybe you change/multiclass 1 or 2", in Warhammer you are bopping through several. A career is more "an advancement menu and particular special feature" that you take, use till you've used up the menu or taken as much as you like from it, then shift to something else. This can also be a narrative shift. E.G.,I have a PC who is started as Ratcatcher (feel in love at sight with the concept for character) and then discovered hidden foresight so became a Mystic and is now trying to learn better manners and clean up his speech to hide his (literally) sewer-based background.

To paraphrase/rip off the wonderful "career song" from an earlier edition,

I started as a Commoner attending the local church,
But I wanted Observation so I could better search,
I stumbled on the poor box, labelled “war relief”
So I took the cash, spent XP, was now a Thief.

I joined a Gang of Thugs, working on the sly,
But I started to feel guilty about the other guy,
So now I am an Agitator, ranting against riches
When I'm not rolling toffs penniless into ditches.

When the lord of the city by posted writ my death decreed,
As I ran, I thought after all this time I should learn to read,
So I became a Student with a change of name,
Still I ended up fighting cults and mutants all the same.

I was going to suggest picking up the WFRP3 core boxed set books from DriveThruRPG, but they have been pulled in preparation for the PDF release of the Player's Guide.

thx for all your answers! They really helped me decide
