I just picked up a starter deck with my friend (I got Investigators Arkham Edition) and what I thought would be a totally different booster pack, The Thing from the Shore.

Of course, they seem to be more different than I had hoped, as the backgrounds are totally different. Is this intentional as I shouldn't play them all together, or did something change, orrrr should I just expect to have to always use sleeves as every set is different but compatible rule-wise?

The cards with the black borders are from the original incarnation of the game when it was collectible.

The game re-booted a little while back, with the white bordered cards and no collectibility: the "living" card game as they call it.

The cards play fine together, although official tournaments are restricted to the white border cards only.

Oh, and some of the older black-borders were re-printed as white borders.

The cards are mechanically compatible, but they need to be sleeved to work together, so the back doesn't show.
