The Apothecary Backpack

Ok. So. Big question. What exactly is it? What does it do?

I've never seen an Apothecary without this. I think it was always about higher visability on the play table. But if they're gonna have it, I think it should be something. So. What exactly is it?

I was looking through some of the DH stuff today, and I saw the stuff for optical Mechadendrites, and I think that this might fit the profile of one, or something like it. But I'm interested on what You , the viewer, thinks about it.

I assumed it was a mobile spotlight, like you see in surgical suites and your dentist's office, and perhaps a diagnosticator array over the left shoulder.

The Ultramarines movie clearly shows the spotlight attachment to be, in fact, a spotlight. It is slaved to the armour's helmet so that the light shines wherever the marine looks. It seems likely it could also change illumination to infrared, ultraviolet, or perhaps other frequencies.

The other attachment I'm not certain about, but I've seen it identified in pictures online as a signum. It could just as easily be a hands-free auspex unit.

It looks exactly like the sensor cluster on the main torso of terminator armor too...

I guess the part on the left shoulder is a signum and/or targeter:

The Signum seems proportionately bigger than the device on the Apothecary's backpack.

Personally, my assumptions are much the same as those of Fenrisnorth - it's part of the full Narthecium "package", incorporating a portable spotlight and a diagnosticator array/chirurgeon's auspex designed to help the Apothecary identify and diagnose injuries, poisons, etc.

You may be right. It seems to be part of the standard Apothecary gear. Signum/Targeter would be more an exception rather than part of the outfit of every Apo.

Well, I'd be willing to give the light to any apothecary in my game, and allow it to go to any color or specturm they wanted to. Optical Menadendrites also give a +10 to perception checks, and then +20 to perception checks at night. Basically also allows it to be used as a microscope.
