Concerned Questions

By Vidiotdragon, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I've recently started playing this game with my friends and enjoy it, however they like to ask questions and I don't have any confidence in my answers as I haven't seen it printed plainly in any rule book or I'm just reading it wrong :P

1. If a hero decides to make two attacks his turn is he allowed to use fatigue to move?

I've allowed them this against my better judgment - im concerned because I would think you'd have to use a move action and then fatigue to move more. I just want to clarify this.

2. Curse of the Monkey God states that the hero cursed takes two wounds. At the start of his next turn he removes one. When the wounds are removed he's back to normal.

But what happens if he's attacked while in monkey form or already has wounds applied to him? Does it still only take 2 turns or does he have to remove ALL wounds to become normal?

3. Upon picking up a weapon or armor are they allowed to immediately equip it? Does this count for buying from a shop? In the book it says "Re-Equip" which to me basically says if a player has already equipped something and plans to change it for something in his pack he takes the 2 movement point cost.

4. Is there a way for me to order more monster figures or map pieces? Upon opening two of the game boxes for the first time I discovered two monster figures that had broken from their base (I don't blame the manufacturers, this kind of thing happens). Plus I'd like to have extras in case or an accident (dog owners know what I mean).

1. Yes. p. 18 states "At any time during a hero's turn, he may spend one fatigue to gain one movement point, even if he currently taking the battle action. This may be done as often as the hero desires. Movement points gained in this manner are spent just like normal movement points."

2. I interpret the manual to mean that the two wounds are merely counters that have no bearing on the hero's life. In other words, the monkey curse lasts three turns: the turn the hero gets "monkeyed", at the end of the next turn (second turn, remove one counter), and at the end of the turn after that (third turn, remove last counter). I am not positive on this though; other people's clarification would be appreciated.

3. p. 18 (again hehe) states "A hero who receives an item from another player may immediately equip it, place it in his pack, or drop it." To me, the re-equip rule on p. 16 means that a hero may spend two movement points to change their gear around again AFTER taking their action. For example, Bob the Barbarian starts his turn. He has a one-handed sword, a two-handed axe, and a shield. He decides to use his two-handed axe to attack the beastman in front of him. After he does so, he has two movement points left, so he uses them to do the re-equip action. He then puts his axe up and holds his sword and shield. In this example, doing this let him get more damage from his axe, then he has more defense from his shield to last him until his next turn.

4. Aside from just buying a new set or getting the expansions, I don't know.

Hope this helps.

McRae has it pretty much right.

As for the broken monsters, call FFG Customer Service and talk to them. They are usually pretty good about replacing parts.

1. As the previous poster noted, the rules specifically allow you to spend fatigue for movement regardless of your action. Heroes should probably be doing this a lot .

2. There are several places in the game where wound tokens are used as counters for timing and such rather than to represent actual wounds. This just means that Curse of the Monkey God ends two turns after takes effect.

3. Previous poster is correct. You can equip items for free when you first get them or at the start of your turn; the re-equip action is used when you want to change equipment in mid-turn, for example so that you can use more items in a turn than you can normally equip at one time.

4. Based on various Internet stories, FFG seems to be very good about sending replacement components for anything that's broken or missing when you receive the game--just contact them about your broken figures. However, as far as I know, the only components they sell separately from the game are the dice (you can order extra dice sets from their web site, or could at some point in the past).

Other posters have fully answered the other questions but just to clarify the (correct) answers to this one...

Note that the hero cursed does not take two wounds. Wound tokens are used as markers and are placed on the monkey token IIRC. This is significantly different to actual hero wounds. When a hero takes wounds you remove wound tokens from his hero card (see my sig!). You do not add wound tokens to his figure (or to the monkey token).

You need to be clear that there are two different mechanisms happening here. What has seemingly confused you is that the same token is being used for the two distinct, and unrelated, mechanisms.

I just fixed them using this:

I appreciate the help, it'll make my game tomorrow go much easier. Thanks.

In an unrelated question: it seems the campaign editor that FFG link hasn't been updated for anything past Well of Darkness. The creator of it states on his website he's done but I also read that there's another one hosted here? I'd like to get a hand on an editor that has all the expansions if possible.
