Lets play a guessing game....

By Dobbler, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Ok, so here is the contest....

With the revealing of the new plot Threat from the East being released in the Targ box, it has already been discussed that we have another card that The Laughing Storm interacts with in a way that inherently removes the drawback of a certain card. Val, Preston Greenfield, For R'hllor, and now Threat from the East...all of these cards have built in drawback or balancing factors that TLS shrugs off . So in order to play this guessing game, you have to assume the following statement is true:

FFG will, at some point in time, errata The Laughing Storm.

If you cannot make this assumption, please don't play this game.

Ok, so what is the game? On this thread, post your guess for how the card will be errata'd. When FFG actually erratas the card (again, assuming they do), we will compare all the guesses on here to the actual errata, and who ever is closest wins.

On 2 Champs and a Chump we will mention this competition and give a shout out to whoever wins. As well, I will send some cards to the winner that may or may not suck. Lastly, you will get a signed copy of The Laughing Storm, with the errata text written in, by the designer himself, Alec Irwin, Skeletonator!

The simplest errata I think would be to make his hand protection ability only active while he is standing and it is during the challenges phase. The card keeps it's utility as possible hand protection against the most common thing to discard your cards (intrigue challenges) and can even still interact with some of the above cards but in a more limited way.

I don't personally think he'll need an errata though.

So Darksbane, your guess is "During the Challenge Phase, he gains:"

"While The Laughing Storm is standing, cards cannot be discarded from your hand.... During intrigue challanges "

I realise this is probably the most Obvious guess but its also the most ellegant. On top of that it manages to neatly still make him worthwhile to play but removes his ability to ignore negatives of stuff like Threat from the East and Val! And on top of on top of that previous thing it doesnt drastically alter the card and isnt Much text to keep in mind while playing, therfore making it the perfect errata!

Grrr...Darksbane beat me to it! I think it will be during challenges only as well. That puts down 90% of the abuse.

So, since I have to guess something different:

If you have less than 3 cards in hand his text is active.

*shrug* I don't think that will win. ~Stupid Darksbane lengua.gif

Despite my obvious dislike of where the card was headed it might be a surprise, but I wasn't 100% in favor of erratta until this plot was spoiled. But, I wasn't convienced on Wildlings either, but don't mind that it got nefted...seeing a lot more exciting range of decks out there now.

This would have been my guess too and what I've already proposed to friends I play with. I really can't think of a better or more elegant solution. So just add me as a second to this guess.

Vigilant

Limited response: Kneel TLS to prevent an effect that would discard cards from your hand.

But only because the better stuff is already taken.

They'll change it so that it's from deck instead of hand.

Seriously Now if you wanted an errata that is simple they may just add "by claim or an opponent's card effects." Which would be strong but prevent abuse.

So the full text would be:

While the Laughing Storm is standing, cards cannot be discarded from your hand through claim or an opponent's card effects.

My guess would be "While TLS is standing, lower opponents claim to 0 during intrigue challenges" since other good ones are taken ;)

Additional text: "You claim one power each time an opponent whines about The Laughing Storm (Limit 1 per phase)."

Is this contest open to hosts?

+2 gold cost, remove deadly and/or war crest.

~Thank goodness for the limit!

The most elegant solution is to limit his effect to only the challenges phase, as others have suggested. However, since I still don't like the way that sets up with Val, I'd go one step further to errata Val to only work during the marshaling phase, instead of any phase.

The notion of making an errata to one powerful card to not abuse the errata of another powerful card makes me want to vomit (insert puking emoticon)

In order to play the game, I'll say TLS' errata will be to have an additional "Ha!" at the end of its flavor text. Its ability and stats will remain untouched.

Val will be banned before any errata to TLS is made.

Erratas in general make me want to puke.

broken cards in general make me want to puke.

"While The Laughing Storm is standing, cards cannot be discarded from your hand to satisfy intrigue claim"

Sadly, Bloodcelt took mine.So I'll tweak it slightly to "...from opponents' effects and challenges. " This way, if we ever see claim replacement effects like in Iron Throne he still protects the player's hand (though I'd like it better if a player with "discard a card instead" claim replacement via a power challenge got around this card if errat'd to only Intrigue challenges, as that would be pretty cool.

I'm not really sure if this is serious or not, because while it sucks when card text does not sync with actual rules text, errataing a card that's bad for the environment is always better then letting it stick around/"solving" it with magic bullet cards

Ok, I really like this version. My final vote goes for this one.

I recognize that erratas need to happen, I just hate them.
