Buckler for DW

Most two-handed weapons are generally unwieldy. Some specific few weapons are unbalanced, and very few have neither or are Balanced.

If he isn't a Storm Warden he can't get the Sacris Claymore and will need to use a normal two-handed power sword or other two-handed power weapon.

Where are you finding unwieldy 2handers? And where are you finding 2 handed power weapons?

RoB has the A. Executioner (power) Axe, A. Power Claymore, and A. Power Spear. All two-handed, the axe and claymore are Unwieldy. In the DW core book there is the A. Force Staff that is two-handed but it is Balanced.

Non-Astartes two-handed weapons can be found in DH and are very similar in carrying Unwieldy or Unbalanced traits.

Weapons are Unwieldy as a balance to them doing more damage. It has next to nothing to do with how a weapon works in real life.

You can fire a pistol with your shield using arm, so I dont see why you cant use it with a two handed weapon.

I can understand the desire to balance things in this regard but the fix is IMO overly punitive. Particularly at high-ranking play where parries and counterattacks are a core (and often deciding) part of any melee exchange.

From what I've seen these weapons are simply not being used (I'm involved in 2 DH, 1 RT and a DW game - only one 2-handed melee weapon and that was a chapter trapping so more for story) then players are voting with their feet and the balance is shifted too far against the great weapons.

The extra hand required, poor concealability and greater encumbrance are also balancing factors. Not having a pistol readied can be very harsh. When I see a player wielding a power fist and a mordian power sword together very effectively I know the ruleset isn't quite emulating the 40k we are familiar with.

And the inability to quickdraw them.

Except it's not. Wielding two weapons at once does far more damage to both individual targets and to hordes, AND you can effectively parry with them, while the extra attack increases the chances of overwhelming a foe with multiple parry/dodges. Not being able to use a ranged weapon hurts, too. Two weapon fighting is just better in every single way.

I'd say the inability to quickdraw a pistol could be mooted by a reasonable GM. If a GM is willing to let a player magically take a hand off the weapon in the middle of combat in order to use a shield, then taking a hand off a two-hander in order to shoot someone really shouldn't be an issue, so long as the character isn't also trying to hit someone, and is just holding his two-hander in one hand and not doing anything with it.

nolsutt; I was basing my comments on fencing and common sense, not what the rules are trying to tell me.

My comment about not being able to quickdraw was aimed at the twohanded weapon, as it is another drawback it has in comparision to onhanded weapons.

But what you said about pistols it true as well of corse.

Finaly a official answer arrived to the question if you can use a twohanded weapon together with a combat shield or buckler:

Salutations Acolyte!

I'm filling in for Ross today answering some rules questions.

Yes they can! That is indeed their intent. If you have both of your hands, you can wield a two handed weapon with them. You cannot, however, parry if you are using an Unwieldy weapon.

I hope this helps!
