How does the Lannisport Brothel work?

By player266669, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

I just bought the AGoT start box and played it for the first time. I was a bit confused by the timing on the Lannister Whorehouse card. It seems to say in the standing phase, you kneel the whorehouse to kneel an opponent's standing character (who just stood up).

But when does the whorehouse itself stand up? In that same phase? Or in the next one?

In the standing phase, all cards in play stand at exactly the same time. Then, you can trigger Responses to all that standing. Since the standing takes place before the Responses, you can use the Brothel on a character that just stood, even if the Brothel stood at exactly the same time. The important part is that it is standing when you go to trigger it. Doesn't matter how long.

I'm having some trouble parsing that.

Let me walk trhough it step by step, and see if I can get it that way. Tell me if I have this right.

Scenario 1: I'm playing in a two-player game. My opponent is the First Player.

1) The Standing Phase begins.
2) My opponent, being the first player, stands all his kneeling cards.
3) As a response to my opponents standing, let's say, Eddard Stark, I kneel the whorehoseu to kneel Eddard.
4) Now it's my turn. I stand all my kneeling cards, including the whorehouse.

Scenario 2: Same as above except now I am the First Player

1) The Standing Phase begins.
2) I stand all my kneeling cards.
3) Now it's my opponent's turn.He stands all his kneeling cards.
4) As a response to my opponent standing Eddard Stark, I kneel the whorehouse to kneel Eddard.
5) Because it is still my standing phase, I stand my whorehouse.

Is that accurate?

All cards on the table (your's and your opponent's) stand at the same time.

So, basically....

1) Standing Phase begins

2) All cards stand (Possibly including your Lannisport Brothel)

3) You trigger Lannisport Brothel and kneel it to kneel another character that just stood.

That's how I've been playing it. So, the Lannisport Brothel cannot use it text to kneel and then stand up agian in the same standing phase. If it kneels, it has to wait until the next standing phase to stand up. Or so I am assuming.

can

Understood. I guess the simpler way for me to put it would have been that it can only stand up once in a single Standing phase (under normal circumstances).

Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the explanation. I had exactly the same question, and right now, it seems to be a bit overpowered! Locking out your opponents best character throughout the game seems to be too good.

There are a lot of cards in this game that appear overpowered at first, but once you figure out this game you can find strategic ways and cards to help you overcome them.

One of my first confusing characters that I had felt seemed overpowered at first was Viserys Targaryen because he was a cheap meat shield.

"Response: Save Viserys Targaryen from being killed or discarded from play, then return him to his owner's hand."

I rarely use him now because there are a lot of ways to beat it.
