Scum to SpaceMarine

By Nimon, in Deathwatch

I dont know who wrote the DoW novels, but if its the same team that did the story for the games then you should probly disregard anything written in there.

I do belive the codex has something to say about recruitment age (it got something to say about everything), but i have not found anything written about it.

Ya, that is kinda where I was going with this. Would be fun to actually play out the backgrounds and what-not. I guess the big draw back is that they would all have to be of the same chapter. I am just about to finish my run as a GM in my current campaign, but I think this would be good thing to put together in the future.

Oh what fun! Lets all play sociopathic tweens! lengua.gif

Well I will probably make the ages 18-20, I was thinking of making a side effect table, simular to psyker sanctioning, if the implants go wrong. I was thinking T/WP tests for each implant. this is all in the primary stages of brain storming once I have put some of this to paper and go over it a bit ill post it so It can get flamed(so looking forward to that).

Why the DoW hate? They get approved by GW as well, and aside from some liberties to make the game more accessible...

And I'm fairly certain there is another novel or short story, though the title escapes me, about an adult being implanted without issue. It was older, and has essentially been retconed, but then again what hasn't been?

One thing about 'skills from before' to take into account? Both the Grey Knights books and the Imperial Fists one that was released pretty recently say pretty specifically they need to 'untrain' certain habits out of their people as much as they need to train them (Or, well, in the Knights' case, completely mindwipe them beforehand)

In the DW core book under selection and initiation, it talks about recruiting hive gangs and putting them through the initial tests. I was thinking this might be a fun way to start the game as a Scum career from DH, and then go through the trials of becoming a space marine. I had dug through the forums a bit to see if this topic has come up, and could not find it, so if it has I appologize ahead of time. Has anyone considered this idea befor, and what are your thoughts on it?

When I worked on my Codex Astartes long before DW was released, I planned a progression from Recruit with no implants as the start up through the Ranks. I think the Dark Reign site still has it for download. I never got around to updating beyond version 1.4 or updating it to fall in line with DW, but maybe it will give you some ideas. Use it, change it and make up your own Space Marine guide... DW is designed for members of a Chapter honoured by their chance to serve in the Deathwatch; something far beyond Recruits and Scouts.

As all the sources say that they rely on the bodies natural growth process I would say that all would be deficient. Maybe with T/WP tests to prevent it being further deficient. But as usual its your game and you should do what you like with it. I look forward to reading your ideas.

Oh, you were part of that project? I have read that a while back when it was posted on Dark Reign. I was thinking about using that , one thing I like about it is that that was written using DH as a basis, so should make the transfer between systems a little easier for me. Thanks on for the work you did on that.

Not hate, i loved DoW and the second one was ok, but there are some errors fluff wise (mostly in the second game). Plus everyone refere to my Captain as "Force Commander", i die a little inside :)

Provide me an email and I will send you the MS Word copy that way you can change whatever you need right in the doc.

Conversely, in Prospero Burns, one of the Space Wolves was recruited as an adult. (Though as stated above, what counts as an "adult" will vary from culture to culture. They probably grow up quick on Fenris!)

There's been fluff about adults becoming Space Marines being made from adults since the early days of the game, and it's never really been beaten down completely.

Or do you really think that Lion El'Jonson's best friend and fellow knight, Luther, the man he pretty much conquered the planet alongside, was some 16 year old kid? And then there was Maggard, from the Horus Heresy series, who was just an enhanced bodyguard recruited to do Maloghurst's dirty work among the fleet, but was being rewarded for his service by being turned in to an Astartes.

So yeah, they could turn adults in to Astartes, or something that very closely approximated them, but they were using biotechnology from humanity's golden age, and it was probably lost in the subsequent heresy, or the intervening 10,000 years.
