Reminder please!

By Deathseed, in Deathwatch

Upon reviewing a rank 1 unused character I made for Deathwatch, I found that I have Burst of Speed and Feat of Strength listed among his starting talents.

Now, naturally, I can't seem to find where he got them, or even where they are in the book.

Could someone please remind me where they are listed (especially in terms of character creation).

I swear my brain is rusting.

Never mind. I found them again, they are Codex solo mode abilities.

Disregard.

Except you FFG. You could take note that better editing and layout is needed. Otherwise, I love you and it's all hugs and kisses.

There are a couple of sources he could have gotten it from as a starting character

Chapter Advances, which are in the first chapter

Space marine general Advances, which I believe are at the beginning of Chapter 2

Speciality Advances, which based on speciality in chapter 2

Deathwatch advances can't be taken by a starting character, but I don't think those are in there.

Yes I agree with that in some respects, I wish they would have put all the chapter specifics in the chapter section, that could make it a lot easyier to get players started with out having to required them to read the entire book front to cover the first night and expect them to retain it.

I have been frustrated by some issues as well, namely that the exact mechanics for some combat functions seem to be listed only in the "order of combat" second and not in the description area of the mechanic itself (Initiative was this way I think).

That said, This is a pretty big book and I don't envy FFG the task of organizing so much material. I also appreciate that they kept it to one $60 book instead of 3 $40 books.

It is, but really, even a cursory review of the book reading from start to finish from the viewpoint of someone new to the book would show the inconsistencies.

Really I find that to be something increasingly common in RPG publishers. It's like they've never put it in the hands of a virgin reader before calling it all done and good. I know they have play testers and the play tester interactions are different with each publisher, but I posit this: put the "completed" book in the hands of a fresh reader/gamer BEFORE calling it done and off to the presses.

I say this because some of the errors are fairly obvious and it seems like something that would be noticed for editing by a good read through before the presses. I speak from experience because I've not done a thorough read-through yet, and even I have spotted some of this stuff fairly quickly.

Again, I love them, but I just get irked that solid editing seems increasingly like an endangered species.

That being said, I'll take a flawed 40k RPG over no 40k RPG any day.

(I wonder if anyone else noticed that power armour gives a penalty to Silent Move and Concealment tests...maybe that could have ended up with the other power armour details on the character sheet eh? See? That kind of thing irks me.)

That was one of the major problems I had when I started, and still have a problem with sometimes today, flipping around the book can really get unnerving,a nd if you have people in your group that HAVE to have it how it's listed in the book, then you're gonna be bored waiting for 10 minutes while they have to be right. Yes, I know someone like this and i loathe it.

When we were starteing, I made a detailed listing of all the pages and common parts of character creation. Took me two to three hours to do, but Now I pretty much know it like the back of my hand, and if I don't, I have a reference sheet.

Would you share that reference sheet? That does sound handy for new characters, especially since the material is all over.
