Examples of Profit factor to help me out:)

By douglas9521, in Rogue Trader

Can you help me with some comparisons for profit factor.I understand dark heresy's Influence factor(watching lots of west wing, being in the army and having an uncle high up in the cops helps with that:) But i dont know anyone with money so can somebody use earth style comparisons so i have an idea where each number in PF might be. Im from scotland so wont know any american references unless they're stinking rich or very famous(Bill Gates etc) Ive probably badly worded this question so i apologise in advance for any misunderstandings lol.

Nobody on Earth has the resources of even a small noble house in Warhammer 40k. If I had to, I'd give G20 nations a PF rating of 15 on average. If you really want some in-game comparisons, try page 270 of the corebook.

Examples of Profit Factor on an earthly scale?

Take for example the catholic church.

Their PF was quite high until the 18th century, i`d rate iot about 70+ because there were catholics everywhere. Today, i think they are in decline, about 30-45 PF.

Someone with a high PF would be the CEO of a multinational company like a big bank or some industrial conglomerates.

Greenpeace: PF = 25

Morgan Chase: PF =55

Catholic Church: PF = 70

President Moebarac: PF = 40

Bill Gates: PF = 40

USA, China, EU, Russia: PF = 100+

Japan, France, Great-Britain: PF = 90

I am with fortinbras on this one no one on earth has the kind of buying power that even a fairly poor RT has.

The only example that I know of that gives an actual price related in some way to ships (from the RT books not fluff) is in Edge of the Abyss it says that Chordas cruiser the Implacable Flame cost "uncounted trillions of Thrones" to refit. A throne IIRC is about equivalent to a couple of dollars.

Thanks all.I knew i'd worded it wrong lol.I know that nobody on earth has the clout of a scale of that chart.Im meaning imagine earth is that chart. They'll be no 100s because theyre is no top dogs let alone all powerful inquisition on earth but i was meaning rich corporations etc.The catholic church is a good example, thanks for that as i hadnt even considered it but its a huge business aswell as a powerfull influence.Cheers all for the help,RT is the game of the three i have the most trouble getting as i have no reference to the scale so this is helping a lot:)

Going by the listings in the rulebook:-

Weak Imperial Governor, Planetary Noble, Planetary Merchant House- all PF 40

Various minor and/or impoversished organisations: PF of 20 to 30

Going by this, I'd say that most of the wealthier nations on modern Earth would rank in the 20 to 30 range, and that an alliance of these nations acting toward a single goal could just about squeeze the 40 that is the lower end of Imperial Planetary Goverrnor wealth and influence. Big corporations would probably fall in the 10 to 20 range.

The big limitation when compared to the Imperium isn't going to be how much PF a world equivalent to modern Earth can muster. It's going to be the fact that they can't buy advanced technology- specifically space-based defences- with it. Meaning that their PF will ultimately be siphoned away through endeavors by whatever Rogue Trader first parks a Starship in orbit. Centuries ago, the rulers of India were vastly more wealthy than the rulers of Britain- yet Britain ended up ruling India because it had higher tech, and the ability to travel to India while India couldn't reach Britain.

I disagree with the PF comparisons to modern countries. What PF would it take to recruit and outfit an army of 1.5 million? Of course, all we would be usefull for a RT would be some resources, and a larg population to convert to the God-Emperor. Hmm, think I mighht have a new endeavour brewing in the back of my mind... :-)

What PF would it take to equip an army of 1.5 million people...? Hmm, not too much really. Equipping an army (10,000+ men) with autoguns is only PF-20 to check. Same with getting some basic armour and other such readily producable equipment. That's something a decent Rogue Trader could do given a little time. You might be looking at not more than six acquisition checks if you spend a couple fate points on each one (to fully outfit 10,000 men). Of course, no modern army equips 1.5 million soldiers all at once either - they do it over time too. I believe the U.S army recruits a little under 60,000 soldiers a year? Easily doable with one acquisition check a week.

And that's without assuming that the RT turns this into an endeavour, sets up proper supply lines, manufacturing contracts and a steady recruitment base (like a modern standing army has). This is just a bored RT with nothing better to do that "Eh, I guess I want my own private army" and throws some money at the problem.

You could probably consider Walmart to fall into the Planetary Merchant House at around PF 40.
