At the moment, I`m rolling ideas around, including a great endeavour for my players, where they might find traces of a lost chapter of second founding Space Marines, that lost all it`s warp-capable ships.

Maybe they conquered a small Imperium made up from one large star system with many planets and asteroids and believe, the greater Imperium has been destroyed by an outer threat like chaos or the hive-fleets.

So now the job of the pc could be to re-establish contact with these worlds and these marines, to bring them back into the fold of the Imperium of Mankind.

It's supported by the timeline. At some point in its history Footfall was visited by two Adeptus Astartes strike cruisers, who demanded tribute in the form of supplies at macrocannon-point. After they received their goods, they departed into the Koronus Expanse for destinations unknown. Their chapter markings are unknown as well.

Well, than it`s something i could expand on. Might be nice to see, how my players will try to get some indoctrinated super-Warriors back in line.

Perhaps they were exploring the Rifts of Hecaton. The get hit by, what may be described as a 'warp strike' (like a lightning strike), and their warp engines, navigators, and astropaths all perished.

I'd make them a successor chapter to the Raven Guard. Say that their original mission was investigating a lead in their search for their Primarch, Corax. Perhaps they intercepted/acquired a feed from a mechanicum probe that had an auger reading matching one of the escort ships that Corax departed with.

Also, there are (almost) no successor chapters of the Space Wolves.

Or there's the Carcharodons(Space Sharks). They're a chapter that was introduced in Imperial Armour X. They were given a mandate by the Emperor to roam beyond the reaches of the Imperium, fighting anything they came across. Fleet-based, answering to no direct authority within the Imperium. It's possible a company had their warp engines sabotaged or damaged in battle and 'washed up' in a dense star cluster where they could continue fighting the enemies of the Imperium while salvaging parts to keep their damage fleetships working.

The SPace Sharks sound like a nice idea as well as the Raven Guard. I`m not that into the Space Wolves, cause i like to include First FOunding Legions/Chapters that are not so well-known. I even thought about making them White Scars.

Salamanders might also be a choice. since they are searching for the artifacts of Vulkan.

Expanding on the idea, i thought a fleet-based chapter would be a good idea, kind of more self-sufficient.

btw. does anybody know, which loyalist Primarchs went missing and who died in battle in the aftermath of the Horus Heresy?

Roboute Guilliman is dead, his body lies in a stasis field but is reportedly healing itself very, very slowly (even though this should be impossible in a stasis field)

Rogal Dorn is dead, only his hands remain, stripped of flesh and the bones scrimshawed upon (although thats from the old Space Marine novel)

Ferrus Manus - Dead at Fulgrims hands on Istvann

Jaghatai Khan - Missing, might have ended up in Cormoragh chasing a bunch of Dark Eldar or might have been lost in the warp.

Sanguinus - Dead at Horus' hands

Lion El'Johnson - Deep in the rock recovering from a near mortal wound dealt by Luthor, whether he is still alive/sentient/in a coma is unknown

When it comes to the naughty Primarchs that sided with Horus, most are now daemon princes (Angron, Magnus, Mortarian, Fulgrim, Lorgar, Perturabo), Konrad Curze is possibly dead at the hands of a Callidus assassin (whom he may have allowed to kill him), Alpharius apparently died at the hands of Robute Guilliman although that still leaves them with Omegon (and with the Alpha legion, who knows exactly what happened - although its likely Guilliman did kill one of the twins) and of course Horus got utterly spanked by the Emperor leaving him not just dead by with his soul annihilated too.

if i include the new Night Lords novels into official canon, Kurze was definietly killed by a Callidus and accepted his death willingly.

you forgot Sanguinus who got slain by Horus just before the Emperor got there.

My recommendation is to create a 21st founding Chapter, they're notoriously unlucky (and at least one whole chapter was lost along with their fortress monastery [a converted station] during a routine warp jump), and several are excommunicate due to mutations in their gene seeds. It wouldn't be outlandish for a 21st founding Chapters warp drives to mysteriously fail. After all, the Chaos gods really didn't like them (there was a long time ago a story about the Mechanicus' meddlings in the White Dwarf, which implicated several chapters as the result of a failed experiment). Of course, they also never explain fully what happened to the survivor of the primary research that creates the 21st founding (except that he goes rogue, kills his brethren and terminates all the personel on site, including an inquisitor and his attendent retinue).

You could use a custodian founding for fun, a loyalist / traitor legion (i.e. those who did not run to chaos), a single cruiser with a few Sons of horus or Luna Wolfs as was their orignal name.

They could be death guards or a founding of a curropted chapter, hidding and trying to prove they are not doomed. Of course their doom may already be spelled for them until the RT as an idea on how to "help" them.

Now my understanding of Rogal Dorn was that he got a supervillain dramatic death. They found his hand...could not the rest of him been sucked into the warpdropped someplace else? Peter Pettigrew from Harry Potter "died" too, but actually cut off a finger.

He could be fitted with a fun cybernetic/daemonic hand that brainwashes him to serve Chaos, but keeps his talents intact! They could just been grooming him until he is to be used in the 14th Black Crusade to help put an end to the Imperium he helped build

Or...he could just be dead.

Hey Whats wrong with us Space Wolves???????? lol Its possible that a Great Company has come looking for Russ or one of his Artifacts led by a Rune Priest vision. Having said that we don't have any successor chapters cos our geneseed doesn't thrive in non Fenrisians. I like the idea of loyalist members of traitor legions seeking to regain their honour.

I remeber reading (but can't remeber where) of a plot device for GM's. A star system which contains an Xenos Tech device which causes ships passing through the system to drop out of the warp and won't allow them to exit. Maybe the Marines have been unable to figure out how to switch the device off to allow them to exit or maybe they have found something else in the system that means they don't want to leave.

You can always use one of the two lost Legions (II or XI) from the original founding. Supposedly one was loyalist and one was traitor.

How about the lost loyalist legion which due to some great mistake in the past was sent with their Primarch by the Emperor into the far reaches of the galaxy in a 10,000 year or so Crusade of penance which only recently came to an end.

An entire Space Marine Legion with their own Primarch would be a major force to be reckoned with.
