Background Reading

By commuterzombie, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Hey everyone,

After a long hiatus from tabletop some friends and I have decided to get back in to it and plump for WFRP v3 (we were largely sold both the fact that it wasn't D20 as we've all done loads of D20, and that we've all been GW geeks at some points in our lives!)

I'm GMing and now have a scary amount of books on their way via Amazon. I'm looking to get a handle on the feel of Warhammer Fantasy again and get an idea of what's happening in the world in general. Do you think that there's enough fluff in the books to give me a decent overview of the more recent developments in the world as well as a recap of ancient history?

If not I've heard that there's a load of new novels that might do the trick but as I'm out of touch I'm hoping that some one could recommend a couple of the more recent books/series that are both a good read and would get me up to speed quick!

Any and all help much appreciated, cheers!

The current books give a very good, functional, overview of the world. Where they may lack in detail, they make up in atmosphere and a good "in-character" viewpoint.

The link in my signature has a slightly dated guide to Warhammer novels. The "essential" stuff there still holds true though; there's really no better entry point than the Gotrek and Felix novels. The first omnibus, in particular, helped create and define the current incarnation of the Warhammer world.

That is one hell of an awesome list. I'll grab Gortrek and Felix and the Liber Chaotica as a starting point I think, and then work my way through.

Thanks for all the hard work you must have put in to that.

It's good to read all the background book for Warhammer fantasy published by BL. The full list looks like this:

Liber Chaotica - about Chaos,

Grudgelore - about Dwarfs,

The Loatsome Ratmen And All Their Vile Kin - about Skaven,

Blood On The Reik - a kind of dairy from many travels thgourg the Old World with cool sketches,

Liber Necris - about Undead,

Darkness Rising - about The Storm Of Chaos ,

The Empire At War - about great battles in the history if the Empire,

The Life Of Sigmar - a little more about Sigmar and the time he lived in,

the Witch Hunter,s Handbook - something about the Holy Order of The Templars Of Sigmar.

Also I recoment to have some great artbooks like - The Art Of Warhammer and Mark Of Chaos: The Collected Concept Art.

Thet will bring a good atmosphere to Your games and You will have a lot of ideas for scenarios.

Well that's my reading list prioritised for me, I'm going to need a new bookshelf!
