We played Arkham Horror, just the base game. I have all the expansions. Next time we want to try a big and small expansion with the base game. What do people think is a good big/ smale expansion combo for newer players?
Good small/ big expansion combo for new players?
I say go with the first two: Curse of the Dark Pharaoh and the Dunwich Horror. I say this for two reasons: their mechanics are the simplest, and they don't make the game that much more difficult (but still add flavor to the base game).
As far as board expansions go, Kingsport's rifts are complicated to figure out at first and not well-explained by the manual, and Innsmouth has a lot of new mechanics to introduce, leaving Dunwich. Dunwich has simple-but-interesting new additions, like the injury and madness cards and the Dunwich Horror iteself (most terrifying thing you've ever seen in your life), so I think it's the perfect first board expansion.
For the small-box expansions, the King in Yellow can trounce unprepared players if you play with the Herald (which is really the only good way to play KiY, in my opinion). The blight cards are nothing nice, and they can make a game very frustrating if you let them pile up. Black Goat of the Woods isn't terribly complicated, but the Herald is a bit terrifying (especially in combination with certain ancient ones; Black Goat/Hastur is probably impossible). Lurker at the Threshold is probably the most interesting small-box expansion, but it has a dizzying amount of new mechanics for newer players, methinks. The one thing going against Curse of the Dark Pharaoh, to me, is that the exhibit items and other new things don't come up very often, but it should definitely add variety to your encounters, at the very least.
So, yeah. That's my input.
I'd go with Lurker for newbies, to be honest. The Herald is more like a guardian, and there are some REALLY nasty cards in Pharaoh (with mummies everywhere and everything...And is that the one where an environment forces you to move along black lines?). But yes, Dunwich is fine. Plenty to love and explore there. Plus, some young gun might just want to try to kill the Horror, then get devoured
And I'm a-okay with that!
Check out Tib's AH statistics report thread above. If I remember correctly, he had made a useful diagram that shows good combinations of expansions that should be played at once.
