Custom Terrain cards

Hey all, I have come up against the same problem as many others with Death Angel - it gets very 'samey' after a short while because there is little variation in the cards. The easiest way around this problem in my opinion is to expand the Terrain cards; with these changed each Location acts anywhere from subtley to dramatically differently.

I've come up with 8 cards per Terrain feature, for a total of 64 cards. Five of the cards are more difficult than the standard (because you know... winning this game is too easy... sorpresa.gif ), one has no change, and two provide some extra benefits.

I've used the FFG artwork so the game retains the same look and feel as the original. If I had any artistic ability of my own (I have trouble drawing stick figures) then I'd do my own pictures and avoid this paragraph. I must place a gigantic disclaimer here that all copyrights and trade marks remains with FFG . If anyone in the legal department thinks that I'm trying to steal their stuff, then let me know and I'll remove the document.

File can be located [retracted due to legal issues]. It's in PDF format, and will need to be printed on A4 paper. Not too sure how it will go on anything else (the US uses Letter size I believe?) so good luck with it.

I'm also working on expanding a few of the other cards, but in a less imposing way - giving special abilities to all the Space Marines (rather than leaving one in each team to be the main cannon fodder) and possibly even increasing the number of Location cards.

If there are any issues, or if anything needs to be changed, then I'm happy to take suggestions.

I just wish FFG too would come out soon with an official Terrain/Location expansion. This game screams for such a thing...

After contacting FFG legal, I've been advised that personal and private use is fine but distributing the file (including that hyperlink above) is not a good thing. Ergo, I am deleting the link.

From the e-mail:"While you may do whatever you like for your own personal use, we cannot allow you to distribute this file containing our artwork in any way, even for free. Please remove it at once. If you recreate it not using our artwork, I see no problem with it."

If anyone liked what I did and wants to draw some pictures of each Terrain feature and a card layout then I'll be able to repost it.

That is a shame because terrain cards are exactly what this game needs the most (right there with new locations). I bet a lot of people would have liked to use your cards. I just hope there really are going to be an expansion, and soon, as I have already reached the point where the game is no fun any more due to its limited variability.

Sorry to see your stuff get pulled, but I guess it was to be expected.

Hopefully we'll see some official expansions soon, to keep the game "fresh"!

Here's a translation of the cards into a handy reference. Sorry about the crappy layout - these forums don't seem to like tables.

Roll a d8 when drawning the card. I thought it would be best to discard a previously used Terrain card, so there aren't duplicates during the game; reroll previously used results.

Ventilation Duct
1 [Red] Flanked Genestealers Spawning at this Terrain card do so behind the Space Marine
2 [Red] Rending Claws When a Spawn occurs at this Terrain card roll the die. On a 0 the Genestealers appear behind the Space Marine.
3 [Red] Overwhelmed When a Spawn occurs at this Terrain card place one extra Genestealer.
4 [Red] Twisted Wreckage Any Space Marine moving to or from this Terrain card may not Activate on the same turn.
5 [Red] Endless A single Genestealer appears at this Terrain card when a Yellow Spawn indicator is shown.
6 [Red] No special effect
7 [Red] Sporadic Attack When a Major Spawn occurs at this Terrain card roll a die: On a Skull the Spawn is a Minor one only.
8 [Red] Sealed Entrance Activate: Place 1 Support token on this card. For each token present, reduce the number of Genestealers that Spawn at this Terrain by 1 (minimum of 1).

Control Panel
1 [Yellow] No Power Activate: Roll the die, on a Skull nothing happens, otherwise use the current Location card's "Activate Control Panel" ability.
2 [Yellow] Sparks Activate: Roll the die, on a 0 nothing happens, otherwise use the current Location card's "Activate Control Panel" ability.
3 [Orange] Swarms Activate: Use the current Location card's "Activate Control Panel" ability.
4 [Yellow] Time Consuming Activate: Use the current Location card's "Activate Control Panel" ability. The Space Marine activating this card may not attack next turn.
5 [Yellow] Damaged Activate: Spend 1 Support token to use the current Location card's "Activate Control Panel" ability.
6 [Yellow] Activate: Use the current Location card's "Activate Control Panel" ability.
7 [Yellow] Integrated Circuits Activate: Use the current Location card's "Activate Control Panel" ability and place 1 Support token on any Space Marine.
8 [Yellow] Remote Viewing Activate: Use the current Location card's "Activate Control Panel" ability the roll the die, on a 4 look at the next Location card.

Dark Corner
1 [Orange] Perfect Hiding When Spawning at this Terrain card place an extra Genestealer.
2 [Orange] Pitch Black When attacking a Swarm at this Terrain card decrease the Marine's range by 1 (minimum 1).
3 [Orange] Sneak A single Genestealer appears at this Terrain card when a Yellow Spawn indicator is shown.
4 [Orange] Single Exit All Genestealers at this Terrain card will move up the Formation, regardless of the Space Marine's indicator arrows.
5 [Orange] Obscured Any Genestealer killed by a normal attack (not special attack or effect) will ignore the attack on a roll of 0.
6 [Orange] No special effect.
7 [Orange] Tight Corner Roll the die before Genestealers attack at this Terrain card: on a 0 or 1, one less Genestealer may attack (minimum of 1).
8 [Orange] Denied Attack When defending at this Terrain card the die roll is counted as one higher than shown.

Corridor
1 [Green] Running Attack When defending at this Terrain card the die roll is counted as one lower than shown.
2 [Green] Multiple Entrances All Spawns at this Terrain card are Major.
3 [Yellow] Wall Runners No special effect.
4 [Green] Collapsed Ceiling When revealing a Swarm at this Terrain card roll the die. On a Skull place it on the opposite side of the Formation.
5 [Green] Strange Gravity When moving Swarms to or from this Terrain card, move that Swarm twice.
6 [Green] No special effect.
7 [Green] Unimpeded Range When attacking a Swarm at this Terrain card increase the Marine's range by 1.
8 [Green] Narrow Corridor Genestealers cannot Flank at this Terrain card.

Door
1 [Yellow] Faulty Door Activate: Place 1 Support token on this card. When Travelling, roll a die. On a 0 nothing happens, otherwise the current player may first slay 1 Genestealer in each the formation for each token on this card.
2 [Yellow] Damaged Servos Activate: Place 1 Support token on this card. When Travelling, the current player may first slay 1 Genestealer in each the formation for each two tokens on this card.
3 [Orange] Without Number Activate: Place 1 Support token on this card. When Travelling, the current player may first slay 1 Genestealer in each the formation for each token on this card.
4 [Yellow] Ddangerous Opening Activate: Place 1 Support token on this card. When Travelling, the current player may first slay 1 Genestealer in each the formation for each token on this card. Then add one extra Blip card to each of the new Blip piles.
5 [Yellow] Slow Mechanism Activate: Place 1 Support token on this card. When Travelling, the current player may first slay 1 Genestealer in each the formation for each token on this card. Then add one Genestealer behind the last Space Marine in the Formation.

Promethium Tank
1 [Orange] Backdraft Activate: Discard this Terrain card and slay all Genestealers on this position. Then roll a die, if you roll a Skull, slay this Space Marine.
2 [Orange] Obstacles Activate: Discard this Terrain card and slay all Genestealers on this position. Then roll a die, if you roll 0 or 1, slay this Space Marine.
3 [Red] Increased Activity Activate: Discard this Terrain card and slay all Genestealers on this position. Then roll a die, if you roll 0, slay this Space Marine.
4 [Orange] Empty Tank Activate: Discard this Terrain card and slay half the Genestealers on this position (rounded up).
5 [Orange] Flaming Debris Activate: Discard this Terrain card and slay all Genestealers on this position. When moving to this Terrain card, or changing Facing on it, roll the die. On a 0 slay that Space Marine.
6 [Orange] Activate: Discard this Terrain card and slay all Genestealers on this position. Then roll a die, if you roll 0, slay this Space Marine.
7 [Orange] Massive Blast Activate: Discard this Terrain card and slay all Genestealers within 1 range. Then roll a die for each Space Marine within 1 range. On a 0 slay that Space Marine.
8 [Orange] Heroic Effort Activate: Discard this Terrain card and slay all Genestealers on this position. Then roll a die, if you roll 0, slay this Space Marine. Support tokens may be used to reroll this die.

Spore Chimney
1 [Red] Chitinous Armour Activate: Place one Support token on the Terrain card. When two Support tokens are on it, roll a die. If you roll a Skull, discard this Terrain card.
2 [Red] Rapid Spawn Activate: Roll a die. If you roll a Skull, discard this Terrain card. When Spawning, this Terrain card will always have at least one Genestealer appear every round, taken from the largest blip pile.
3 [Red] Toxic Collapse Activate: Roll a die. If you roll a Skull, discard this Terrain card and roll the die again. On a 0 slay this Space Marine.
4 [Red] Sticky Floor Activate: Roll a die. If you roll a Skull, discard this Terrain card. When moving to or from this Terrain card a Space Marine may not change facing.
5 [Red] Dedicated Effort Activate: Spend 1 Support token then roll a die. If you roll a Skull, discard this Terrain card.
6 [Red] Activate: Roll a die. If you roll a Skull, discard this Terrain card.
7 [Red] Psychic Shock Activate: Roll a die. On a Skull, discard this Terrain card and roll the die again. Remove that number of Genestealers up to 1 Range of the Spore Chimney.
8 [Red] Vigorous Elation Activate: Roll a die. On a Skull, discard this Terrain card. Any Marine may then spend one Support token to remove 1 blip from the largest pile.

Artefact
1 [Green] Touched Activate: Roll the die. On a 0 discard this card. Otherwise place this card in your hand. You may discard this card after 1 of your defending Space Marines rolls the die to make the attack miss.
2 [Green] Tainted Activate: Roll the die. On a 0 or 1 discard this card. Otherwise place this card in your hand. You may discard this card after 1 of your defending Space Marines rolls the die to make the attack miss.
3 [Green] Corrupted Activate: Roll the die. On a Skull discard this card. Otherwise place this card in your hand. You may discard this card after 1 of your defending Space Marines rolls the die to make the attack miss.
4 [Green] Activate: Place this card in your hand. You may discard this card after 1 of your defending Space Marines rolls the die to make the attack miss.
5 [Green] Emperor's Fury Activate: Discard this card. Remove a number of Genestealers from the Formation equal to the number shown on a die roll.
6 [Green] Emperor's Blessing Activate: Roll the die. On a 0 place 1 Support token on this Space Marine. Otherwise place a number of Support Tokens equal to the die roll on any Space Marine divided in any way.
7 [Green] Emperor's Glory Activate: Place this card in your hand. You may discard this card after 1 of your defending Space Marines rolls the die to make the attack miss. Then place 1 Support Token on that Space Marine.
8 [Green] Emperor's Protection Activate: Place this card beneath this Space Marine. While holding this card, when defending the die roll is counted as one higher than shown. You may discard this card after rolling the die to make the attack miss.

I think that these are great modifications to the basic Terrain Cards already in play. It is a shame that they had to be pulled because of the artwork.

Perhaps you could post the PDF without the artwork? This would permit us to come up with our own custom artwork where appropriate.

In the meantime, I'll probably just export the information and fiddle with it somehow.

Agreed. More terrain and activatable cards. Which would mean more numbered location cards. The one new terrain card with the expansion set is good, but more would be better.

While I like the expansions, I think they could have been a bit bigger.
