Question to European Players.

By bloodycelt, in 3. AGoT Organized Play

I want to try and visit europe this year, and as part of my visit I'd like to participate at the Stahleck Tournament.

So do you guys know when it is this year.

Also, as a "patriotic" american. I only speak English fluently (I can read and write Spanish if I have a dictionary... but I don't think that will help). Would this be a significant hinderance?

Thanks.

You can find some info about that here . Things might change so keep on checking the forums (it will be announced here).

Regarding the language, I don't expect that to be a problem at all. Keep in mind that there are lots of languages there (Spanish, German, Polish, Finnish, Portuguese, Italian, French, etc.) but most players speak English if they are able to. What's more, I would be glad to speak English with a native speaker in order to improve my pronunciation so you will be most welcome.

I'm from boston, are you sure you want to learn bad pronunciation?

It would be like asking Stag Lord for spelling tips.

I'm sure bad pronunciation is even better than the one I currently have lengua.gif

Hi Bloodycelt!

Mi inglés es tan malo como tu español, probablemente xDDD

However, I can understand and speak with the majority of the players in english. If we have intention of comunication, everything will be ok.

See you in Stahleck 2011!

Yeah, and even grunting and pointing will work while playing gran_risa.gif

I think you said : My english is worse than your spanish? (or as bad... I'm not sure.)

This is my general canned response to spanish:

Hablen Ingles por favor, por que no comprendo la lengua del espanol.

Ahh don't worry you will be fine... English is used mostly by the players from different countries.

The only time I don't speak English is when playing in Iberian Melee tables where all the players are Spanish and Portuguese. In this tables I speak a mixture of portuguese with spanish because the brain gets confused between talking with my fellow portuguese and with our neighbours the spanish. (our languages are very similar). lengua.gif

What helps sometimes is to know some spoken german outside of Stahleck, specially during the trip there, to get some info and help...

I don't think I spoke anything else than english at the tournament last year, and it was the primary language for all of the events really. ~oddly few people speak Finnish outside of Finland...

Some people may be a bit shy in speaking english, but most everybody understands it pretty fine, so there should be no problem at the tournament. :)

Oh, and according to Wolfgang's preliminary information the dates are:

most likely there will be 2 events:
- 14-16 Oct 2011 (AGOT+LOTR)
- 18-20 Nov 2011 (WHI+COC)

Would be great if there were some american visitors as well, and I can heartily recommend Stahleck and the town of Bacharach as being a magnificient place to visit for a holiday in autumn. You won't regret it. :)

englsih is used by most of the players. and i often realized that even with german/austrian fellows i was speaking english - it just became a habit.

would be great if you can make the trip!!

also, i can confirm the date now: its going to be 18-20 Nov 2011 for AGOT!!! so there is a change (but this time it will stay).

I believed that after the release of the targaryen deluxe expansion the official language for stahleck this year was going to be dothraki.

I am learning it from the dothraki dictionary, which can be seen here: http://asoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/topic/44722-dothraki-dictionary-dothrakiorg/

In addition, I have noticed that the dothraki is very close to the spanglish that we speak some spanish players, like me or aioria. Si I expect to make progresses very quickly.

Well, maybe it will be some Lannister english? Who knows.
