Mood videos...

By Spivo, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

I have a weekend alone, and wanted to rent a few videos to get inspiration for Wfrp...

I'm not looking for really weird videos, and nor very obscure (hard to find ones). I saw Solomon Kane, and found it a bit (much) over the top really. I want gritty, but not gritty just for the sake of it happy.gif

I thought about Black Death (with Sean Bean), and the new Robin Hood. I know the later is mainstream, but hope there are scenes there, that depict how dirty/filthy the Dark Ages were.

Anything else...?

The old Excalibur and Dragonslayer come to mind.

Check out Flesh and Blood (Paul Verhoeven, 1985).

Fear the films are to old for the video store to have them... seen Flesh and Blood, which was a good mood-setter btw.

What about "Valhalla Rising"? It's definitely dark and visually exceptional.

Moreover, the german movie "Krabat" might be a good inspiration, too. It's no kind of "sword and dragons"-fantasy, but it has a deep dark atmosphere and shows what it means to be a black mage. This cursed, dark mill is an unforgettable setting...

No WFRP movie discussion can continue without mentioning Brotherhood of the Wolf and 13th Warrior. To this list I'll now be adding in the Black Death you mentioned as it hits most of the right notes. The new Robinhood isn't bad either. I liked it more then Gladiator and I'd say in terms of feel it's similar to Braveheart. Flesh and Blood, still a favorite of mine but it hasn't aged well. But in terms of just pure nastiness it's hard to beat.

Looking at some classics if you can find them. Roman Polanski's version of Macbeth (officially titled The Tragedy of Macbeth) from 1971. It's grim it's violent and it's a classic tale. Also another good movie is for the feeling is The Vikings (1958) staring Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis.

Mainly looking for new movies, been through most of the old ones happy.gif

Brotherhood, 13th, Vikings, Valhalla all good movies.

Gonna get Black Death, Robin, and try'n find Krabat, thanks happy.gif

The Name of the Rose with Sean Connery and Christian Slater. Trailer:

Also, The Reckoning, with Wilem Dafoe, Tom Hardy (gonna be Bane in the new Batman film!!) and Paul Bettany.

Both of these are mysteries and are set in very realistic but gritty medieval settings.

For something a bit left of centre, but still very much feeling like Warhammer, try Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead.

Plunkett and Maclean is a good, underated romp with the right sort of period feel.

And if you like flesh and blood, there's also The last Valley with Michael Caine and Omar Sharif which keep the 30 years war vibe. Mr Caine certainly looks the part.

I recommend:

The Duellists (1977), Scott

Barry Lyndon (1975), Kubrick

Perfume, The Story of a Murderer (2006), Tykwer

Time bandits.

When it comes to Warhammer I always thought, Halliwell, Priestley, Davis, Bramba and Gallagher, owed a lot to...

Not new by a long shot but still a lot of fun.

+1 to Brotherhood of the Wolf and Plunkett & Maclean.

They both capture that warhammer feel, IMO.

Seen most of what people recommend. Would like to get a copy of Krabat though...

Watched Robin Hood, which had some good stuff, and lots not so good. But the mood thing, which I was looking for, was good.

Black Death, was actually very good, considering the Warhammery feeling. Isolated village, Zealot Witchhunter, and gritty combat.

So of those two, I highly recommend Black Death. Don't expect artwork, watch it for the atmosphere.

I watched 'Season of the Witch' a few weeks back. That was ok for that sorta thing...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the recent Solomon Kane film.

I'll second Dragonslayer and any Terry Gilliam film that deals with the Dark Ages.

Maybe becuse I mentioned I had seen Solomon Kane, and while the scenery was good mood, I did not care much for the plot... but for scenerey, it's great happy.gif

I've got a few more recommendations for visual entertainment with a Warhammer feel. They are all period pieces, so there's nothing resembling fantasy trappings, but they are all still quite good for the historical part of the Warhammer setting. Some are mini-series so may prove difficult to find at your local video store, but they are available for streaming from the red rental giant, netf***, if you have access to it.

The Crown Prince - Mini-series - A wee bit modern for Warhammer, but has plenty of Empire-like politics and beautiful representations Vienna and Prague.

The Ends of the Earth - Mini-series - Also a little modern (1812). Takes place almost entirely aboard a ship on a voyage to Australia. Fantastically gritty representation of nautical life. Makes Master and Commander look shiny and antiseptic by comparison.

The Pillars of the Earth - Mini-series - A bit early for Warhammer (12th century). Tells the story of the construction of a cathedral over several decades. Lots of interesting fodder for a regional campaign that centers around more mundane adventurers like burgher, bailiff, pedlar, commoner, scribe, etc.

The Duchess - Film - Great period costumes! Think courtly intrigue in Nuln or Altdorf. Way better than I was expecting.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World - Film - More nautical life, if that's your fancy.

Oh, also The Affair of the Necklace - Movie - Story of the events that presaged the French Revolution.

Also, also Rob Roy - Movie - Betrayal, vengance, and cattle. Tim Roth is a fantastic evil wanker.

Yeah... that film is to me a "How I came to love Tim Roth as an actor" movie happy.gif

Not again this topic? It's the 3rd or 4th topic about the movies that will bring You in to the Warhammer mood.
