More newb questions, including my first character...

By Vanity Evolved, in Rogue Trader Rules Questions

Now, I'm a big fan of 40k the wargame; however, the same series I adore, I tend to find a bit iffy in roleplaying it. I find the constant shouting of For the Emprah! and playing the equivilent of a rage filled Paladin in the DnD sense at every turn horribly monotonous, so I found myself quite adoring Rogue Trader, where I get to do whatever I want, and even be a free thinker who commands his own ship.

I've found myself what is most likely going to be a solo game, and quite a lot of the classes didn't really appeal to me (Superspy accountent, EXTREME shooty missionaries and guides through the Void bored me senseless), so I defaulted to a near heretical Explorator; as my stats have turned out, a rather competant one. Rather than a belief in the Ecclisiarchy, the Omnissiah or becoming a complete logic machine, he's far more the cliche 'You are what you make of yourself', quite literally. Hopefully, going into the Genetor class, and playing some kind of... transhumanist who believes on improving himself, and those under his command, rather than 'I'm going to press-gang everyone into my ship because the world is grimdark, full of GRIM DARKNESS LIKE MY SOUL, and life is cheap!'. The GM even agreed to running a slightly less grimdark rendition, more along the lines of Firefly.

But enough of my innane blabbering; what I meant to ask was, how fitting was this concept, and how much would it work in the 40kverse? Also, I've rolled stats, but I'm not sure what to do with my Origin path... for someone owning a ship and commanding people, I'm assuming I'll need to spread myself out a bit. And while I've played a little bit of Dark Heresy, I'm not too sure whats important for staying alive. =P So far, my current stats are...

WS 45

BS 41

Str 41

Tou 40

Agi 43

Int 37

Per 34

Will 45

Fell 40

So just wondering, any suggestions or tips for surviving the Void?

Your INT is somewhat low for a Tech-Priest. And I would reduce the STR/TOU in favor of best-quality cyberlimbs that come with characteristic-enhancing bonuses.

Do you mean reducing them with the Origin path stuff? These are my stats from straight rolling, so I didn't have much of a choice =P

First off those are some really nice rolls.

There are 2 ways you can play an explorator..

You can go the high int, can fix or make anything type (which is what most people think of)

Or you can be the type that reminds people that the Ommisiah is not just about fixing your toaster. The type with more armor and firepower than a tank. Lets hear it for secutors!!

Your stats are set up as a secutor or other combat class.

As a side note, though there are no rules for it, most GMs will allow for swapping an attribute or 2 for the purposes of playing a character type/class.

This is why I only use base 25+take 100.

Why? Does someone whine if someone else has better stats?

I have always preferred the randomness to dump stats.

There are advantages to both styles.

The assign points method allows the player to build the type of character he wishes to play.

The random method adds variety and can lead to characters with well more "character" to them.

It's not random if you keep rolling until you get the result you want. Or would you **** a Voidmaster by letting him keep a bad roll on his Agility? And there are no dump stats in Rogue Trader, you're capped at +20 to any one stat, and you can't subtract from one stat to gain more points, so it's not very min/maxable.

Then dont roll till you get what you want. In my game, you get to roll in front of everyone else, and if you cheat, you leave. If you roll crap, I wont stick you with it, and generally I do a roll n (where n is the number of stats) times and put them how you want.

As for the Voidmaster, you void your own argurement by stating that the game is not min/maxable. That works the other way too. If he had a 27 agi, I might let him swap for something else, but just because he has a 33 agi and a 45 Fel, he gets to play what he has, not what he wants. I dont like that every character gets to pick his amount of optimization based on how much he min/maxes. Every class x having dump stat of value y is what bugs my far more than any class tries to maximize their primary stat.

For Rougue Trader what books and what page does the information about the Righteous Furry appears?

Are you seriously implying that a Voidmaster with 45 AGI at rank 1 is powergaming?

Well, with that fascinating debate over with. =P

It was quite obvious I'm a Fighty-plorator, though I don't think the Intelligence is -that- bad (still have Origin paths, and cheap Intelligence advances :D ), but what would be recommended? I'd probably be mixing it up in combat, with the typical 'sword in one hand, bolter int he other' kind of 40k character. I'm assuming it'd be more recommended to boost Strength/Toughness (both cheap boosts), and with The Flesh Is Weak (hopefully the GM will allow me to Elite Advance Flesh is Weak 1 when I go Genetor, so I can keep the line), go slightly more melee? I don't see many options for boosting melee other than Aim Half, and Best quality, whereas I can easily boost even 41 BS to 81 with a Longlas/Archeotech Laspistol (Half-Aim, Accurate, half-Range).

Hate to sound so clueless. ^^'

You want to go into the character type who is a master of flesh crafting, yet also replace most of your flesh as it is weak? That's what you're trying to do in going Genator and trying to get The Flesh is Weak, which makes no in game sense and is a little munchkiny.

As the Genetor was one of the Alternate Ranks I wrote, I can with absolute honesty say that it is entirely intentional that Genetors do not get access to The Flesh Is Weak.

Once your group obtains a book, you're welcome to do with it as you please, of course, but it was a deliberate choice on my part that Genetors not get The Flesh is Weak. Adding that talent back in means that you end up with "Explorator + Extra Stuff" rather than "Explorator but different".

Hmm, that is true. Though, is kinda' expensive (1000XP for Flesh is Weak, in addition to the rest of the line -and- Mastery of Flesh or whatever).

As for the fluffy side, well... it does mention in the description that Genetors find -both- to be a combination of becoming awesome, not flesh insted of mechanics, or vice versa. But yeah, is rather munchkinny...
