Creature Guide and Vault Review

By Heretek2, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Wrote a couple of reviews on Amazon concerning these, not sure if it's a fanboys perspective on the game and it gets a bit critical on some points it's not an attack since I gave both positive reviews and the game is awesome and a step in the right direction for RPG's but it gets fowled by sorta sloppy errors and sometimes poor execution despite it's high production values so reader beware. I put it up here for anyone to read if they want to get someones take on it who bought and read the guide and vault. Both recived 4 out of 5 stars

Creature Guide ****

OK, I already reviewed the Creature Vault and this is the companion guide for the stuff in that box set. This guide can also stand on it's own without the Vault if you already own all the other expansions and supplements but it's nice to have almost everything in one spot.. note I said almost! that is because this set while pretty comprehensive and with the addition of new Creatures to throw at you downtrodden group of rat catchers and smugglers such as the Dragon and the Vampire... it leaves out Creatures published in previous expansions such as the Lord of Change and Plague Bearers (However the stats and powers are in the book book in a condensed format without much info on them or how to issue their powers and abilities) This struck me as a bit wrong, it really should have been fully comprehensive since they repeated all of the creatures from the tome of adversaries and the book while nice and hard-covered only weighs in at 110 pages for $30... WFRP 3 is already pound for pound the most expensive table top system on the market today(something I repeat in every review cause it's true)but the production quality is top notch and I just can't understand why Fantasy Flight would skimp on a few more pages instead of making it a truly comprehensive creature guide! It also contains some nice ideas about how to use the creatures written about in the book as well as some new rules and rule clarifications concerning them but.. it falls short of the wonder that was the WFRP 2nd edition bestiary with it's awesome pages after pages of fluff and background color. This has sadly been the state of most of the 3rd edition stuff and it's a shame since having played all 3 WFRP editions going all the way back to 1987 being the first time I played Warhammer Roleplay, I have to say this is my favorite edition and if the same attention to explaining the world had been spent as has been going into explaining the rules twice due too poor editing it might be my most favorite game ever. All of this aside I think this is a great addition to the WFRP line and a must buy for WFRP 3 players!

Creature Vault Review ****

I bought this along with the Creature Guide and as advertised they work very well together, The vault essentially gives you all the Creatures and their abilities from the core set up to the latest expansion prior to it's release as well as all the new creatures in it's companion guide in card format. These are all very well done and should help GM's move things along swimmingly and it even includes many of the NPC's from the earlier adventure sets (Gathering Storm and Edge of Night) It really does pretty much include everything, including the powers of npc's in earlier adventures such as the one in the Tome of Adversaries. It does not however include the cards for Dark, Necromantic and Skaven Magic as issued in the earlier sets and these components are still exclusive to the box set it comes in. It also contains tons of new Creature standees for use in the game, sadly without giving any more plastic standee holders. Overall this is a great addition to the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay line if a bit of a pricey one but if you are like me and you have been buying this stuff as it has been released than you know that this is to be expected! Thankfully waiting till it was released on Amazon and getting a 30% discount on it makes the price a bit more bearable. Combined with the guide this stuff will last your party ages ...another great product from Fantasy Flight for a price..
