Mark of Xenos

By Mishiman, in Deathwatch

Rites of Battle is out so now we need more enemies for our SM. What do you think upcoming Mark of Xenos should include? For now we know that Tyranids, Tau and unfortunately Chaos [why unfortunately? because that is Xenos book and it is only 144 pages=more Chaos, less xenos] are in. What else? In my opinion Eldar [Craftworld, Dark Kin, Harlequins and Exodites] and Orks are must have. I would like to see also some minor races like Hrud and maybe enigmatic Barghesi [yes I know that is wrong part of galaxy but when Kroot can reach Koronus...]. Also I think that really big creatures like Hierodules and Squiggots should be left for another adversaries book that will introduce titans [yes I know about scout titan in RoB].

I agree that xenos should fill out the majority of the book. Chaos should get it's own tome some day, particularly with Grey Knights appearing in the upcoming DH Ordo Malleus book.

Wish list for Xenos - Eldar & Dark Eldar is probably at the top for me. I've got enough Ork info from the other series' titles for now.

I personaly think that we need more lesser known/mainstream and unique xenos. This is what I consider one of the greatest achievments of Dark Heresy and Rogue Trader, we got such wonderful concepts as Yu´vath, Rak-Gol, Slaught, Cryptos... And there are many more to be explored, Hrud, Barghesi, Ur-Ghouls, Khrave, Children of Kingdom.

I know that Carnifex is iconic Carnifex, but I´d love to send a kill-team against Court of Exiled Ur-King or let them safe an ancient relic in face of full warp spawned Hrud migration.

I agree with Torog. I'd like to see some nice local xenos talent that we haven't seen before. A mix of malign and disinterested xenos that have to be purged! happy.gif

While I too want to see more exotic Xenos get some screen time I think FFG should fill in the headliners first.

I agree, Eldar need to be purged!

Demiurge, so we can squat them....

I mean squash them!

I don't like the way FFG currently designs adversary-books. Take creatures anathema for example. A couple of eldar entries, a couple of ork entries, some mutation, some thech-heresy creatures etc.

I wish they would release books that focused on smaller groups of enemies. One book could focus on chaos in all (or most of ) its glory, Marines, Daemons, dark mechanicus etc.

Another book could be about Tau or Eldar or whatever. And other books again could focus on FFG created adversaries like the slaught. I have no problem with coming up for stats for those that FFG haven't statted yet, but I'd like some more in depth releases from FFG.

Well, like most people in this thread i would like to see the main xenos (eldars, orcs and necrons) that was left out of the core book. I do not own the other FFG products regarding 40k, and is new to their product so i dont know if they already have a book.

Another thing that would be fun is a "pick-and-chose" system to quickly build your own Xeno creation without ruining the balance. It would be great for GMs with less experience (or megalomania) to have guidliness.

This exists in Dark Heresy.

As N0-1-H3r3 has said before, the Necrons don't actually become a known threat for close to a century after the current timeline, so the chances of Necron stats being made are slim compared to other xenos, I think.

I also think that FFG will focus on the main antagonists of their setting, meaning Chaos, Tau and Tyranids being the ones to get the majority of the book. I'd be surprised if Eldar and Orks got a big section, given they're not actually in the Jericho Reach to our knowledge.

The Orks are everywhere. There are virtually no places in the galaxy where there isn't at least some level fo Ork activity.

BYE

i'd like to see eldar as an eldar player sending wraithlords vs the deathwatch would be fun (at least for me :) )

more exotic xenos would be good my gaming group has some very experienced 40k gamers who have been playing 10 years at worht of GW stuff so really know the fluff , throwing in something they dont know about is always good

proper daemons for chaos , eg bloodletters, bloodcrushers, plague beaeres etc would be nice

i expect lots of Tau and nid goodness due to the setting but then we already have tau suits, stealth , fire warriors and kroot plus all the vehicles in rites so how much more Tau stuff is needed ?

Sniper/Sniper drones, I want to see sniper drones.

"I wish they would release books that focused on smaller groups of enemies. One book could focus on chaos in all (or most of ) its glory, Marines, Daemons, dark mechanicus etc"

You must have a lot of money! Considering that every book is a hardback at least around 30 bucks that would be an expensive proposition.

I actually like their current strategy. Define a focus for thecampaign and focus on fleshing out those key enemies. Agreed that Chaos isn't really Xenos, but they are such cool adversaries that I would have been really disappointed if they hadn't been included.

So, given the focus, I would vote for:

  • Genestealer Cult
  • Tyranid Monstrous Creatures
  • Chaos Daemons
  • A few of the big Chaos Chapters
  • More distinguishing features of Chaos Marks
  • Specific NPC personalities in the given context rather than just statlinesall with a few adventure hooks

Kind of wish it had been Orks and not Tau, but that's just my own bias. I'm sure there will be an Ork Waugh in a future campaign.

Im not much fo the "we decide how you should play" principle, if i want necrons in my game i will put necrons in my game :) BTW, is there a exact date for the Deathwatch setting and if so why M40?

Given the size of the book, it'd be pretty unforgivable to completely neglect Orcs, et al.

Although there's already plenty of 'monster' stats around for the 40k universe that can be used with minimal effort, so a bunch of Tau/Chaos/whatever stats would be dull as far as I'm concerned. I'd like to see some completely new ideas in print, or stuff that hasn't already been done to death for RT/DH: Jokero (or however you spell it), maybe more Slaugh, a bunch of new xenos...

Deathwatch is set in 817.M41.

FFG have a nice free timeline document HERE

Nothing stops you from using Necrons. However if you run DW in "current time" then much of the mystery of the Reach is ruined IMHO. It also throws off all the lore around Dagon. Things easily changed granted, but still.

Im not saying i will use necrons in J-reach, but i would like the tools to build my own game.

Its true that the first imperial report of necrons comes 897 M41, but it dosent meen no earlier encounters existed. It would make a nice "last stand" mission for the ending of a kill team. And... well, people love necrons :D

If you have TEP you know that, indeed, things were not totally dead prior to that date. :)

Far as I can tell there is a lot of "Questionably Necron Stuff" in the Jericho Reach.

Hell, I'm pretty sure the Warp Gate is theirs. :)

Well, FFG have got their official setting, and since they aren't allowed to change major bits of fluff (you know, like when Necrons started appearing a lot), they have to stick with what they've got, hence why I doubt they'll ever release full Necron antagonist rules. In that regard, they do decide how you play, unless you come up with your own house rules.

As for the exact date of the setting, I believe it is around year 500 or so of M40 (M40 is the 41st millenium, the same way the 1800s are the 19th Century).

To be frank, I am not even sure how much they are allowed to detail given how GW loves to keep things obscure and guesswork.

And they show up occassionaly in legend and such. It's just a slow awakening. And if anyone would know about them and have reason to encounter them beforehand... it's the Deathwatch.

And as others aid, Imperial Colonies disappear or are wiped out all the time. No one knows why...

In the Ciaphas Cain books they show up before the date mentioned as well.

I'm sure there will be info on orks and eldar, but what I'd like to see are more minor/local xenos, maybe ones without empires that would mainly be encountered working as mercenaries. Oh, and more beasts (as in dumb animals).

Hmm- does anyone else think that WH40KRP might be a good platform to re-launch the Slaan (from Ist Edition/Rogue Trader) as a race of mercenary psykers...?

Actually the M means millenium, so M40 refers to sometime between 39,001 to 40,000 so the 40th Millenium falls between 40,001 and 41,000.

817M41 would be the year 40,817

If the first real necron reports are from around 897M41 then 80 years early wouldnt be breaking the timeline too much. Huge hordes of necrons sweeping across secotrs of spacce, yeah, that is really pushing it, but I think The Emperor Protects does just fine with the wraiths and tomb spyders (especailly wiht the side bar defendint the appearance of these beasties).

Having some scarabs and even a warrior show up at a later date in the books would be ok as well.

And while I know they are different "games" I would be upset if I got this book and it had the same orks in it as from Creatures Anathema, or even the same eldar. I imagine we will see more original creations or some interesting twists on what we already have (perhaps grotesques, krootox, terrellians, and so forth).

I myself look forward to Creature Compendium I am sure FFG will one day produce with all the critters from all three games in one volume.
