Just checking, Did anyone have any problems with their Deatchwatch CE when or after they got it?

A week after I got mine the spine broke apart and took the back cover off. Opened the book twice before that. They are trying to help me with this so that is good, ut just wondering if there were any other problems?

I too have experienced problems, and have some thoughts and a few questions.

The third time I opened mine, I noticed that there was a binding issue - the glue that kept the first map page-set (with the white backside that has the edition number "X out of 2000" on it) stuck to the rest of the book was weak. It would come unstuck and the cover and first two pages would kind of "flop around" - or they would have if I let them anyway. I was really careful in my handling, thinking maybe I could reset the glue and put something heavy on the cover to fix it. I tried that and left it for a full day and a half (all the while itching to get back to reading!). It did not work, and as soon as I opened it, even gently, the page came apart again. So, I decided to be gentle and careful with it and look into what kinds of glues might be okay to use - if I would need to search out book binding glues, or what.

However, shortly afterwards (a day or two maybe?), When I opened the book, the main bulk of the book - all the central pages - popped loose, and was no longer stuck to the inner spine! I freaked out and almost cried - "No, not my beautiful, beautiful precious!" I cried. My wife calmed me down and gave me some suggestions, and I ultimately used a very small amount of super glue along the area where the glue had come unstuck from the edition number page, very carefully lining it up, and then setting it to dry with something heavy on top for two whole days (longer than needed, I imagine, but I wanted to play it safe, so I could at least get back to and finish reading the book! While I worry that this is far from an ideal solution, it has worked well thus far, and I have been able to keep reading with less concern than before...

My question stems from the confession that it actually never occured to me to complain to the source, or ask FFG if this was a common problem and what they would/could do about it to help me. In addition, now ht it has occured to me, I have misgivings about sending the book away (if such a thing were needed), as I am still reading it (I am taking my time - what I have that is not filled with work and chores - and so am still only about halfway, loving very minute so far). So, when you said that FFG was working with you, what did you mean? Are they giving you ideas, or did they require you to send the book to them? If so, did you have to pay to ship it to them? Did you have to ship the whole shebang (metal case with customised oath) or just the book? Were they going to repair your edition, or replace it? I am curious to know if I should request similar assistance, or if my superglue solution is good enough...

Thanks for any response!

Post # 66, 75 and 108 are talking about the same problem:

Also, a friend of mine had the spine of the book come off!

I just bought mine today, at my FLGS. First look through didn't show any problems. There were a few "creaking" sounds on a couple of pages though, so I'll take another look tonight and the coming days, to see if anything happens. I'll report back if the pages start to fall off.'

I once read about some other book with similar problems. Someone said to cover the spine with a towel and carefully run a hot iron across, a couple of times. Apparently this will soften the glue which will then settle and, with a bit of luck, hold the pages better together. I don't know if it helps, and it is a bit of a gamble to try this method I gues...

I got mine, and yes was disappointed with the quality. It does not close and truthfully the pieces are put together poorly. I do not feel like going through hassle of trying to get it replaced so I will just keep it and never make the mistake of buying another.

My question is would they be replacing the books, or would they just be sending out another one? Because even if they have everyone send back their original books, what are they going to do with them? When the binding broke on mine, the bottom and top of the first page went with it. You can't just glue that back together.

My copy has issues with its bonding as well. The front map page is loose and doesn't sit in with the rest of the book. Kind of disappointing considering the cost of the CE.

I e-mailed them and they said to send pictures and that they would wait and see how many they needed to order. I am waiting for a response from my last e-mail. They didn't give me any hassles or negative feelings. If it happened you should notify them and send pictures.

Hmmmm I have a regular version that I read, and honestly only opened mine once. I should see if I have this issue.

Well, about two weeks ago they sent me a brand new copy case and all. Now I have a reference and a collectible one. Sweet.

Can I ask if the paper used is appreciably heavier or of higher quality than the 'norm'?

The binding issues seem to be exactly the same as those experienced with first-run printings of SLA Industries. The problem was caused by the paper simply being of too high a quality, which rendered it fairly non-porrous so that the glue used in the binding was not absorbed. Basically: The book seems to need better glue or worse paper!
