Silas personal story

I think the fateful dust card says "the first player is devoured. pass the first player to the left."

Mechanically, I don't see why The Messenger couldn't prevent the devouring. But Kevin did clarify that the first player token is passed only when the first player is devoured, so I guess the dust decks would be reset and begin again for that same investigator.

Okay. So I guess this ruling supersedes the ruling from last November

When you draw the "you are devoured" Dust card, the three Dust decks still get reshuffled and the First Player marker is still passed—these effects aren't dependent on being devoured. You won't run out of Dust cards.

Essentially, as Quachil closes in on you, he spares you because you've devoted yourself to Cthulhu. So instead of dissolving you, he beats the tar out of you. Regardless, he starts stalking someone else.

See guys! I'm no good at this.

I do remember seeing a Kevin quote that read, "The first player token only gets passed if the first player is devoured," or something like it. And that's what I'm going with unless I see something to the contrary.

Sorry, don't mean to hassle you. The game is convoluted enough I doubt anyone could keep track of everything.

Nah, I'm just frustrated that I can't even agree with myself a few months apart and was shown instances of that twice in only a few hours! And I pride myself on consistency.

Oh sure! You say that NOW! But just a few months ago I heard you saying, and I quote, "I pride myself on inconsistency." Which is it?!

Btw, off topic (as if that weren't), I just noticed you have Descent. Which do you prefer Descent or Arkham? And by how much and why? Hey. On second thought, that might not have been OT after all. Gasp.

Maybe it's as though a deep one approached Silas during his most vulnerable moment to get him to turn, and The Messenger sacrificed himself to stop the Deep One.

OR!

maybe it's the messenger who becomes the deep one!
meaning Silas still haven't set his fate straight, and can turn any time..

::Laughter:: I like this explanation.

"I have a message for you."

"Oh yeah? You've been with me for a while, and now you're going to tell me?"

"You will turn into a FISH MONSTER."

"Really."

"Yes. Let me show you—"

"!!!"

i'd say that event would require an impassible horror check. i'd say your former comrade turning into a deep one is a tad more horrifying than a deep one just hanging around in the south streets. in front of your eyes i mean.

Woops... do those icons mean "I own this"?

I don't own Descent. I'm participating in a Descent campaign as Lord Hawthorne (renamed " Mörd Mjolnir ").

Arkham is definitely my favorite. For one, I own it. Additionally, I prefer cooperative-type games. Plus I'm not hugely interested in medieval-fantasy so much. And there are no pieces to paint! That said, I love Descent's expandability and how much effort FFG has poured into support and scenarios.

Although whenever I play Descent, I long to play DOOM. I've corrected the dungeon master multiple times on rules by remembering how they operated in Doom. Mechanics are pretty much identical between the games, except armor works a bit differently (in Descent it's harder to deal damage, but when you do it can be a SCHLOAD. Doom's damage is more evenly paced, but you lose it constantly).

There's truth to those words that no news is good news. gran_risa.gif

That's very true. I also prefer DOOM to Descent. Even if Descent campaign mode is great, DOOM is simply... dunno... better? The oppressive mood, the ceasesless passing of time that causes the situation to continuously worsen, the mix of sci-fiction and horror, the constant pressure on marines and so on, the idea that you can run out of ammo and then you're screwed and the sadistic chance for the Invader to play cards forcing you to discard ammo.. yeah, it's a unique feeling :-)

Thanks Julia. You reminded me why I prefer Doom. Descent encourages you to explore and kill and get treasure. In Doom, you just have to survive. Your only treasure is momentary escape from Hell's unrelenting minions.

Sorry to up an old thread, but was wondering the same thing. I finally found track of this reference: www.boardgamegeek.com/article/3519848#3519848 . The answer is from Kevin himself.
