because a shoggoth moving when spawning raises terror level and near-releases dunwich horror without a chance to even fight it. too small board. :(
and because the end game would be sooo much more boring without the epic battle cards. i'm sure the kingsport sales would've been significally reduced if the epic battle cards would've been sold separately or among another expansion. they're just that good.

People sure seem to like emphasizing their hatred of BG ;'D I wonder if the division between people who seem to like CotDP and those who don't is based on whether they picked it up early on or late into their Arkham careers?

Interesting question. But it is unclear which group you think likes it. I got AH before any expansion was ever even announced, so when DP came out, I was thrilled with it. The theme, of course, is fantastic, but after a while, I was sick of the Barred cards, and tired of the Benefits/Detriments. Then Dunwich launched, and it became REALLY apparent how riddled with typos and gameplay munches DP was. Only after card comparisons did I realize I was no longer fond of DP’s Exhibits.

So am I conforming to your hypothesis?

Maybe I'm biased because Hastur is one of my favorites, but I would seriously buy KiY just for the Herald.

The two previous expansions provided some decent content, but that's about it (injuries and madness aside); I really think KiY marks a turning point in genuine gameplay innovation, rough around the edges though it may have been (cf: Act cards)

Cause Dunwich Mythos deck is not well balanced as the other big box expansions
Cause the King in Yellow is at the moment the best official Herald in town
Cause even some of the small cards in the Lurker have a poor wording (Sledgehammer); and the expansion was planned and released without caring about some MAJOR issues, like gates entering vortices

Curse was very confusing when it came out, and still is!!!

Dunwich was heavenly, new board, new everything, and still interesting today.

KH rift maintenance is fiddly.

Meeting Great Old Ones in their home world is fun, but it's horribly worded
The rift mechanics never dilutes with the increasing number of expansions
The Herald is a Guardian

CotDP: Exhibit items were cool, but they didn't come up often. Overall, it didn't affect gameplay enough.

Kingsport: The only incentive to go to Kingsport was to investigate to get rid of rift markers, which is lame. (The White ship is pretty awesome, though.)

Lurker: It introduces the coolest mechanics. I like the relationship cards, pacts, power tokens, etc.

It was a tough choice between Lurker and the King. The King in Yellow is definitely the best herald, though, by far.

For you players who play All Expansions, you're sure doing your darnedest to get rid of the only small box that has GATE BURSTS. I thought y'all liked harder games...but maybe diluting gate bursts and next acts make games "harder" in some different way I don't see...

Even if you don't like the Kingsport board, it provides eight new Investigators, four new Ancient Ones and the wonderful Epic Battle deck and Sinister Plot cards! How can you not rank it ahead of any small box expansion?
