I need names for a half-dozen or so cargo vessels. Mainly a mix of Vagabonds and Jerichos with a single Orion in there. I have an adventure going, but when I needed names for some of the backdrop vessels participating, I hit a mental block. Any serious names will be appreciated, and if you want to throw in a sentence or two to give some more description to the vessel, that's cool too. Full stats are NOT needed - these are background players in an Endeavor the PCs are involved with.

From my campaign so far we have:
The Thor's Redemption - A cruiser, boarded and captured from the Temple Tendency and renamed to this as a sort of "F**k you" to the heretics. Named after Sebastian Thor, the saint who threw down Goge Vandire and ended the Reign of Blood. The Temple Tendency are descendants of Vandires church.
The Praetorian of Vaxanide - A mechanicus monitor cruiser with an illustrious martial background, now crewed by servitors and a handful of tech-priests. Renamed to this after a famous action (prior to it coming into the explorers hands) defending the planet Vaxanide against an Orkish waaargh. Still a very popular ship at Vaxanide, something of a planetary holiday when the ship berths there.
The Foxes Gambit, The Tenacious fennec, The Renyard and The Vixen - a mix of frigates and raiders, the escort craft of our dynasty. All named along foxy lines as a foxes head is prominent in our Dynasty's heraldry and our Rogue Trader is fond of cunning.
The Relentless Onager - A sturdy transport ship, repurposed from an old pilgrim vessel with many of the mass berths available.
The Kindjal - A harmles looking transport ship that is actually a pirate hunting Q-ship.
Other named vessels we've encountered so far
The Wrath of St Wencelaus - A war cruiser in the service of Bishop Duchenko, another rogue trader and former high ranking churchman
The Redoubt - Solomon Haarlocks flagship (ims Haarlock is a man seeking redemption for his predeccessors sins and is an all round good egg)
The Frozen Heart - Frigate flagship of another rogue trader. Plasma battery armed close in brawler. Very tough little ship.
The Bright Lady - Another frigate, owned by the swashbuckling and all round ladies man George "lucky" Anowner.
The Dominion - Margo Chordas Emperor Class battleship, largest imperial vessel in the expanse. If you see this, you are pretty much stuffed.
Widow of the Rifts, Darkest Prize and the Scarlett Penant - a trio of frigates in service to the Winterscales.
The Ladies Favour - a massively heavily armoured frigate belonging to a Xenos hunting ex-navy admiral (Admiral Johannes Van De Walken)
The Dwimlicht Sunset - Stolen Frigate in the possession of a very competent group of imperial guard deserters/mercenaries.
The Inevitably Successful In All Circumstances
The Nuestra Senora de Ophelia Siete (Our Lady of Ophelia VII)
Adam Smith's (X) [where X is a noun or verb]
The Lament of Gluttony
The Under New Ownership
The Lender of Last Resort
or
The Golden Rule (He who has the gold...)
The Tyrannis Exercitio : I use it for a Cruiser, but you could use it for a Q-ship or armed Merchantman.
Pilgrim, Cardinal, Wanderer of Light, Light of Faith : good names for transports. I use them as such.
Angel of Dominance, used for a Lunar class cruiser with barracks and munitorium. Yeah its the crusading RT.
Fortress of Solitude. Intended for the RT who wants go Lonely wolf pirate or have lots of those pesky Imperial Missionaries aboard ^^.
Light of (Salvation/the Emperor/some planet/) Generic anything.
Dominus Astra ^^. No not really, but when i think Imperial ship i simply have to include it.
Eternal (Salvation/warrior) Generic as well.
Golden (Wayfarer/torch) Another generic prefix.
So, wie are talking Transport vessels here?
Foreign Horizone
(a converted mass-colonist transporter; under the command of Captain
Jacobo Landner
)
VanderFalk
(debased/remoduled form of the german expression "Wanderfalke", which means peregrine falcon; for a fast transport which sacrificed cargo space for speed; Captain
Serwen Bervta
)
Siribius
(a freighter I used in one of my games as "name slot"; under the command of Freecaptain
Stigius Boggwarth
. A typical boring bulk-transporter)
Mölchis
(another boring bulk freighter I used to fill a slot; under the command of
Lycillia Noelia Zarland
)
Addendum
(a forma military supply freighter; still stuffed with a lot of shuttles rigged for in-void-repair missions; ex-military captain
Scilio Trachetes
was given this vessel after he (was) resigned. The man is a veteran of many battles, but most often on the receiving end. He is 68% machine now. Nigh to none of his crew went with him since he has a reputation for being suicidal. He would style himself as "brave and relentless")
Dutiful Daughter
(yanked from the name of a "Firehawk" BattleMech from an old novell; the ship was re-christened as a Patriach of a Linage offer this ship to his Daughter to honour her with a command of her own for the profits she reaped for her linage. Commanded by
Sabella Herbingstett
).
Promessing
(another freighter, with a history of chance deals. The Captain is Manx McGuire; Captains name stolen from two characters of the B-Movie "Dark Ocean")
Tally Due
(a ship which had longstanding contracts to move imperial tithe about. It lost its contracts, and rumours for the reason give the ship an ill repute among fellow traders. The
Tally Due
is commanded by the bitter and cynical
Mephew Honnguard
)
Cavernous
(a really huge transporter, intended to move goods along which cannot (or should not) be dismantled to reduce there size. Commandes by José Hernandez Imperialez Garcia. A man with the character of an overcharged plasmadrive; warm, energetic; erratic and explosive).
Lorn Venture
(a long distance trader with a history of dealings with fringe systems. Captain
Ignatz Goldsteyn
is rather open-minded for an imperial citizen and the ranks of his officers contain some people whom do good to keep a low profile while ship is in coreward territory. The captains trophey room do contain a fair share of xenos devices, as well).
Saragossa Benicce
(a truly acient pilgrim ship. While propose, officers and captain might have changed, the crew remained largely the same. The 120year old Ship-Bishop Movius Cloven is rumoured to have as much sway with the main crew as the captain. If not even more).
Yeomane
(a transport with crew of very experienced voidmen and strange customes and superstitions. The title of captain is not herital but as a captain dies, the council of the ship clans vote for a new Captain from the ranks of the command crew whilst a "Captain Provost" takes over the command for the while. Captain (Luciel Phaedron) and crew have some very strange superstitions which are odd even among voidborn.... and those will be taken into account while making decisions).
I suppose there are a few formats for ship names:
[Noun]'s [Noun]
ex: Scintilla's Wrath, Ophelia's Prayer, Drummond's Salvation, Drusus's Anthem, Irene's Sword, Aether's Call, Infinity's Breath, Salvation's Flame
The [Adjective] [Noun]
ex: The Swift Falcon, The Infallible Judge, The Void Serpent, The Grand Adventure, The Tireless Porter, The Bronze Tyrant, The Iron Will, The Last Chance
The [Noun] of [Noun]
ex: The Ire of Merov, The Trial of Fate, The Beast of Burden, The Reckless Enterprise, The Pride of Lo, The Hand of Honor
The three that survived the last encounter and are now traveling with the PCs are the Munificent Promise (a fat and shiny merchant ship that's actually a q-ship), the Burden of Forced Gratitude (merchant transport converted to be a troop ship for a penal legion), and the Tears of the Penitent (a woefully maintained pilgrim transport that's built for smuggling under cover of doing the God-Emperor's bidding).
I would have called one of them the Nostril of Palpatine.
Has anyone ever spotted a good starship name generator out there? I use the names of old navy vessels from the states and the U.K. most of the time.
Some of my favorites -
Colossus Iligitimus
The Stompasaurus
Bigus Gunnus
The Cupiditas est Bonus (Greed is Good/Latin trans)
The Miss Fortune - With a suitably busty pinup girl painted upon the side of the prow
Rob the Heretic, Gouge the Mutant, Cheat the Unclean - For the less scrupulous rogue trader
The Fool Errant - For the fool
In my campaign, starships have often names taken from Platos dialogues: for example "Gorgias" or "Kratylos".
