Things you do to make your AH games more fun?

By gb14, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

I was just wondering if you guys add any interesting rules to your AH sessions that make the game more fun?

Two of mine are:

1. When you have Ashcan Pete as a character, you have to talk in the third person with Ashcan Pete as your name. Ex. "Ashcan Pete's gunna go to the General Store."

2. When you're playing as the Doctor, you have to constant remind people you are in fact a doctor and make doctor puns.

Ex:

"Person 1. I'm going to the hospital instead of getting that clue."

"Doctor. Suture self. Trust me, I'm a doctor."

I'm interested to see what you guys come up with. Also to ensure I'm not a crazy person. happy.gif

First of all, heh, those aren't exactly rules. More like some dialogue for more engaging play. But me and my sister do occasionally crack puns at strange situations such as Wendy Adams blazing away with a Tommy (in case you don't know her, she's a lil' kid), FINN Edwards drawing from the Innsmouth Look deck (gah, my name even sounds like a fish appendage!), George Barnaby sacrificing a Food item to the Lurker due to a Reckoning card (here's a piece of bacon. Now scram!), and countless other situations that don't make sense whatsoever.

Also, I ALWAYS emphasize the investigator's masculinity or feminity. Joe Diamonds always flexes his muscles when he takes down a 3-toughness monster, and Jenny Barnes always flirts with the Dean to give her a retainer.

I don't think you're crazy... in fact you are completely sane compared to me! gran_risa.gif

haha good to hear, and I thought her and mandy thompson were a little suggestive.

Whenever I play with Patrice and I draw a Mythos card saying "remove all monsters from xyz neighbourhood" and Patrice is in that neighbourhood, I remove Patrice character marker as well ::laughing::

::chuckles:: I was thinking the exact same thing.

I just hope you don't put her back.

We don't generally do anything specific, but there have been a few amusing moments for our group...like when someone playing Michael McGlen went to become the deputy and launched into a skit portraying McGlen as the most obvious gangster of all time applying for a job at the police department. :-P We also imitate the old "final boss kill" noises from the SNES Final Fantasy games if we face the AO in battle and beat it.

We also had several jokes about Ashcan Pete and his army of bums last game, when one player made it his personal mission to collect darn near every ally in the game. O_O

Of course I put her back! It's too a marvellous thing to discover how the devouring gate appears ALWAYS under her feet, or how entering the Underworld (for the very same bloody gate opening at the Unnamable) leads her to meet I-cannot-remember-exactly-the-name forcing her to discard all her clues (once I had to discard 24 clues, the other one 29. I mean, 29. Almost 6 seals)

In real life i work as life insurance salesman (few years ago i worked as traveling salesman) and my name is Slobodan ( Boba) which is similar to Bob Jenkins (who is traveling merchant too :)

another funny story is with Luke Robinson - first time i played i told "i can exit on any gate" so now when someone go in Other world people joke on my account - too bad you are not Boba, he can exit on any gate :)

we had two games in a row where one of us, the same person, was lost in time and space when the ancient one awoke leading him to be devoured and not participating in the fight.

the mythos card leading to the awakening was Happy Times Are Here Again!, both times. this card is now special to us.

another thing is how to read the mythos card A Sandstorm?!
the tone of the phrase is suggested by the ?! in the title, so the card gets read with great empathy to have it pointed that it's not just a question or a fact. it's both.

The first time we fought the AO, I made sure to put on every single piece of intense movie music during the fight including:

The Pokemon Theme and Fight song, Indian Jones, Kill Bill, The Matrix, Back to The Future, and finished with You're the best around from Karate Kid.

We stood up the whole time and almost broke a CD rack in the process.

I USED TO DO THIS TOO!

And often, "a monster appears" will be accompanied by the FF4 random battle music gui%C3%B1o.gif

::Laughter:: that's what you get for playing with her. Oh the board game knows. Don't think it doesn't know.

Let us rejoice at the coming of Cthulhu! The joyous end is here! Ia fhtagn!

If this occurred when Tsathoggua was the AO, then there would be no celebrating ("urban" effects are replaced with "nothing"). The citizens would probably shrug or yawn.

And then Tsathoggua would kill everybody and you'd lose.
