Monster Surge

By alboy, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Am l doing this correct.

l draw a Myphos card which has a gate at lndependence Square in red. There is a Gate already open at lndependence Square so l do a Monster Surge, as there are 4 gates open and 4 lnvestigators l draw 4 Monsters, after placing the 4 Monsters on all 4 Gates that takes me up to 6 Monsters on the board. One of the Monsters is placed on a Gate that has a lnvestigater plus a Explored marker upon it, which l think is correct so far.

This is the part l am not sure about.

1) Are these Monsters returned to the cup after evading or combat as no Gate was opened.

2) lf not, does the lnvestigator have to evade or fight the Monster which has just appeared on the Gate where there is a Explored marker now or in their next Movement Phase or does the lnvestigater not have to fight the Monster as it is the first time in the next phase that they will attempt to close the Gate.

l hope all this makes some sort of sense.

Mythos.

1)No. Monsters only return to the cup when they appear in encounters.

2)He has to evade and fight them during movement. As usual. One doesn't fight monsters during the Mythos phase.

The only time an investigator can choose to avoid monsters is the turn they come out of a gate. If they've already been out a turn, that choice is no longer an option.

Is this correct.

When l return to a Gate in Arkham from Another World l place a Explored marker on it and ignore a Monster if there is one present. (can l choose to fight it if l want)

ln my next Movement phase l must evade or fight the Monster.

ln my Arkham phase l can try to close the gate even if l evaded the Monster.

Yes that is correct. When you return from a gate during the Movement Phase, you receive an explored marker and may choose to fight any monsters there. Then during the SAME turn on the Arkham Encounters Phase, you may close or seal the gate.

However, if you fail to close or seal the gate, NEXT Movement Phase you have to deal with the monsters there normally.

I got this rule wrong for two years. Don't follow in my footsteps. gran_risa.gif (Dam, don't you dare speak of it!)

Yes to everything else.

To this, the key is you may ignore the monster/s (may). If you choose to, you may fight it or any number of them.

You can only ignore the monster if you returned during the movement phase, not from the other world encounters or Mythos phase.

You can choose to engage any or all of the monsters.

Clearly, if you survive, you can (during AE phase) try to close the gate. If you went insane or unconscious you leave the space and lose your Explored token.
