Expansions for Baratheon

By goldenhk, in 4. AGoT Deck Construction

I never built a deck using expansions other than those my friend bought. I remember that they are Core Set + King of the sea + Princes of the Sun + 2 King's landing. Now my friends and I decided to buy and build our own deck. What are the best expansions for Baratheon? I am not planning on spending too much for the first time.

I guess I will buy the Core Set + Kings of the Storm and build my deck mostly on that, and also 3-4 Max expansions to enforce it, for now.

I am currently thinking of:

The War of the Five King --- Host of Robert, very important to immune to power challenge.

Battle of Ruby Ford --- for Overzealous Scout and Mustering Yard to save King Robert's Host.

Rituals of R'hllor --- For the Asshai characters.

The Tower of the Hand ---- For The Hand's Judgement ( total cancel ability - seem very rare in the game), Jon Arryn and Eddard Stark.

Please give suggestions. Only essential cards are needed. Also how should I build my deck? Can't find index for threads about deck-building on forum.

Also we all decided to choose a 2nd house that we might build in the future. Will Targaryen be a good one in terms of different ways of playing? I found Greyjoy, Stark and Baratheon are closing in term of ways of playing (direct assault) while Targaryen and Martell are kind of similar (back stabbing etc).

Some essential Baratheon cards from the chapter packs:

The Fox's Teeth from Wot5K

House Florent Scouts from Wot5K

Fury of the Stag from Ancient Enemies

Banner for the Storm from Calling the Banners

Knight of Flowers from Secrets and Spies

The Iron Throne from A Sword in the Darkness

Melisandre from Return of the Others

Ser Eldon Estermont from Mountains of the Moon

If you wish to play with Seasons, you might want to look at Summer Port or Summer's Champion from A Song of Summer.

This list is, of course, not exhaustive.

Thank you for you list. Just wondering the minimum expansions that I can get for the max essential cards.

Frankly, I'd get all the packs from the A Clash of Arms cycle first. Who knows how long they will be available. And they have a plethora of very nice to essential cards for all the houses. Just look at this thread - from all the cards we mentioned between us, most come from this cycle.

Have you seen this site? http://www.cardgamedb.com/

They've done in-depth reviews of the ACoA and DotN cycles. Might help you decide.

Is Fury of the Stag essential? Cos I am already getting Kings of the storm.

Also Is Vigilant really that powerful? It seems really important as the website stated.

Fury of the Stag is an extremely good plot as are all the Fury plots, but it certanly might not have a place in some decks plot selection.

Vigilant is IMO the most powerful house specific keyword.

Other cards I'd consider as being good for Bara

Highgarden Refugee - Along with the other Refugee characters they are great free characters especally useful for Baratheon as they tend to rush and don't have trouble winning dominance

King Robert's Host - totally preventing a challenge is pretty huge and Baratheon has the best spread of Kings around so there is a good chance you will be able to play it for 4 gold

Kingswood Trail - another way for Baratheon to control the flow of the game.

Knight of Flowers - Shadow decks are still around but not near as much as they used to be. A 3 cost knight who doesn't kneel to attack or defend

The Battle at the Wall - Card draw is lacking in Bara. this gives them another power challenge and draws them cards. With their Vigilant ability they have one of the best chances of any house of keeping people standing to be in that challenge.

Due to limited $, I am getting 2 packs from ACOA, and maybe add on one or two more later.

And also Rituals of R'hllor, just to play with Asshai.

Here are some thoughts about Baratheon's shadow expansions.

Kingswood Trail is extremely powerful I think. With King's Landing it promises card drawing for Baratheon, at any time almost. In fact The promising coming out and in of the shadow ability makes it the best companion to any "comes out of shadow" ability cards, eg: Black Cell, even I have never used it

On the other hand Small Council Chamber is very weak. Small Council events are rare and Baratheon doesn't have any good ones.
