Questions About the New Hardbacks

By LordPasty, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

It's my understanding that vampires have squeezed their way into the new Creature Guide(?). This intrigues me, because I love the way WFRP has traditionally handled them. Totally a usable villain or ally! I own Signs of Faith and Winds of Magic, and they aren't in there... did I miss a supplement that had them, or are they new to the guide? This also makes me wonder if there's any surprises the Player's Guide as well? From what I know, halflings are still missing?

This bums me out a bit, because it seems to me that with the group of 5 (sometimes 6) players that I have it would be easiest to just do the Amazon thing and get another core set. That would give people the option of two people playing the same career, we would have a second rule book, it wouldn't be the end if a card was lost, and there would be plenty of dice to go around. Now I'm conflicted!

It was stated prior to release that the Creature Guide and Creature Vault would contain several new monsters (not seen anywhere else). So the Creature Guide and Vault are both totally excellent products for a GM to pick up, regardless of previous purchases. Don't forget, the Vault also has the nifty new Creature Cards and creature action cards so you don't have to play out of the book!

The player's Guide has a couple new rules, and numerous clarifications and errata that aren't in the Core Set. It seems like it is also a 'must buy' too at this point. It is handy, though, for having a list of careers/actions/talents of the Core Set + supplements, not only for quick player perusal but also in case you lose a card.

Yep vampires are in with some good mechanics as well.

May I hijack this thread and ask if any necromancy spells come with the Vampire in the Creature Vault/Guide? Or if there are rules for Necromancers in them too?

My group enjoys the mechanics of the thing and all the pretty cards, but they really wanted to just have a book in front of them so they could see all their options.

Vampires are cool.

Please, can u expand on this and tell what kind of vampires are in there? I own the c.vault but there is just one "generic" card for vampires...though there is a good choice of actions cards to choose from and customize the vampire (idk...necromantic spells for necrarchs or combat cards for blood dragons), this could be a limit for running previous campaigns that featured a pretty much all of the differents blood lines...

There are differents profiles or rules for each of them in the guide?

There isn't. It's a short blurb about Vampires (a few paragraphs) - but doesn't go into the old "Blood Dragon/Strigoi/etc." family system that was in 2nd edition. Perhaps they are saving this for an expansion, or excluding it altogether.

They are the most dangerous of the Undead so far (in terms of threat level).

As far as mechanics go, they have a "Blood Pool" tracker that starts at 5. This is their Expertise level. Everytime they use an Expertise die in a check they decrease their blood pool. Everytime they kill an opponent (I think, memory is hazy here), they increase their blood pool.

I seem to recall they also have another mechanic that makes them hard to charm or influence.

I'm sure there will be a supplement at some point in the future to expand on vampires, but that is likely some time from now.

Yes, the generic vampire in the CV is very tough ... nearly Greater Daemon tough, which is about as tough as you can get so far in WFRP3. Not an opponent for the faint of heart to face directly.

Thanks for expanding on this topic!

Yeah, they're really tough...guessing that for pitting pc against them u should really play also theirs weakness...strange that there are not mechanics like "vulnerable to silver" or garlic...all the sort of things famous from pop culture! :)

That's unfortunate. When it comes to vampires in Warhammer I know that they are weakened by some religious artefacts, primarily if not exclusively by Sigmarite artefacts. However, simple things like ordinary Sigmarite hammer necklaces wont really help. Also, garlic is completely useless against vampires in Warhammer, but it is widely believed by citizens of the Empire that it does work. On the other hand, silver have some effect on vampires.

Don't take my word for it though, this is just what I remember at the top of my head.
