"After a player wins a (military) challenge against you, that player takes control of The Bastard's Elite."

Question: does the change in control happen before or after claim is paid?

I'm sure ktom will weigh in on this with his expertise, but I would think control changes in step 4 of the corresponding framework action window (that begins with "Determine winner of challenge"), so all other framework events, including claim implementation, resolve before step 4.

• Determine winner of challenge
• Settle claim
• Award unopposed
• Award Renown

Absolutely nothing can happen when resolving a challenge until after those 4 things are done.

OK, that's overstating a little bit (saves, cancel, replacement and constant effects can be applied in there), but no passive effects or Responses. As mentioned above, we're talking about a passive effect here, so it's always after claim.
