I'm considering buying CoC and am wondering if the core set is enough for 2 people to play or if each person needs their own set. I'd hate to buy it and not be able to play because no one else I game with has any cards :-)
Thanks for the info!

A Core Set is enough for two people to play. IF you want to use the same faction is the only time when a second Core Set is needed.
Thank you very much! Exactly the info I was looking for. I also dug out this review which also provided clarification. More than likely I'll be picking it up soon.
Also a "might be stupid question" .. I am waiting for my copy of CoC from amazon. If I get my friends hooked and we want to play more than 2 .. say 4 of us do we need one extra core set or 2?

While it is possible, if you really wanted to, to fashion 3 decks out of one core set, if you want to play multiplayer rules it's highly recommended for each player to have their own story deck, as it makes keeping track a lot more easy. See the multiplayer rules:

For 2 two-player games 2 cores are enough. You might even concider getting one core and one Secrets of Arkham, since it comes with it's own (but different) story deck, so you can play 2 games at once, out of the box.
That is a nice way to get started, but remember that you are spreading the card pool pretty thin that way, and deck customisation is mostly impossible this way as you'll have to play every card to have enough decks. But it's good for getting started and getting the know the game.

For four players you'd definitely need two boxes, though.

thanks for clearing that up, one more question though would Secrets of Arkham be a wise first expansion to buy?

I second the core+expansion combination. If you're playing with friends it's probably a good idea to decide on "highlander decks", where the übercards only appear once anyway. Or something like AGoT's civil war style of play (one draw deck shared), since CoC factions can be mixed without penalties. Getting a full six-pack cycle is also immensely helpful for variation (and potentially a new mechanic).

"Highlander decks" and "AGoT's" sorry I am pretty new to the whole card/boardgaming phenominon. Not sure what you mean
"Highlander Decks": Only 1 of any card is permitted in the deck ( There can only be one... )
"AGoT": A Game of Thrones (other LCG from FFG based on the books of the same name)
