Horses

By Asmuth, in WFRP Rules Questions

How much? One of my biggest complaints about the game is the pricing for equipment...the system used simply doesn't work for all equipment, horses being one of them. Since the entire economic system was changed from previous editions I can't use their equipment guides. (I don't have a problem with changing the economic system, I think the three tiered economy works ok, I just wish coming up with prices was a lot simpler.

Cheap / poor ones around 2/3 gold. "Normal" riding one around 5/6 gold. More exotic (racial, fashion, etc.) or specialized (heavy cavalry), well, much more :)

Check out this (old) house rule (credits to whom put it up, inspired from discussion around here if i remember correctly), which is very compatible with the new information from the Player Guide's Equipement section & tables (they added transport, food & lodging guildelines)

There is an excellent look at horses and some house rules here:

He uses two different ways to come to horse prices ... you can decide which makes the most sense to you.

edit: Cwell beat me with the same info :)

Don't forget that buying horses is the perfect chance for GM to teach the players a leason about Warhammer world!

If you don't know something about horses, you will get swindled... age, temper, physical state, etc... a horse is NOT a generic product.

The other fun lesson you get to teach them is when they have to enter a cave or underground ruins, their horse doesn't magically disappear to be resummoned later by using the bridle. In a previous game, I had a player come back out of a cave and say "Ok, I'll ride off toward Marienburg." to which I replied "On what? Your horse is gone."

Took him a while to track it down, and when he did, Goblins were eating it.

rofl, that comes from playing to many MORPG's where you stuff your horse in your bagpack when not using it...

Well my fun part was when a player bought a warhorse... he said "I want to buy a warhorse" to the horse-salesman (do they have a name?). So after some haggling he got it for a sum (forgot how much), but the player was happy, because he got a good deal.

After struggling with the horse through 3 sessions, a hunter told him that the horse was more than 12 years old, of poor breed, and in no way trained for anything but looking like a horse. It was a great deal of fun, and taught my players that animal handling was a nifty skill to posses gran_risa.gif
