Noob needin help with new "Advanced Fighter Card" and other questions !

By Gotsomespray, in Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition

Hey all, just about to play my first game of TI, and before I do was hopin someone could help explain these 2 questions I can remember :) thanks

I just finished replacing the old advanced fighters tech card with the shattered empires update, and am wondering... How do fighters then work towards your fleet supply? If a fighters on their own does it count as a single ship in a fleet?

One last question, could someone explain the Yssaril Tribes racial ability, " You are allowed to skip your action turn during the Action phase. You may not skip two such actions turns in a row. - How can this ability be useful :s Please if someone knows elaborate and enlighten my noob self!!!

Advanced Fighters: Advanced Fighters may still be carried and supported just like before, on carriers, war suns and on space docks and they will NOT count against your fleet supply. However, the advantage to Advanced fighters is that now they move WITHOUT carriers/war suns and may live without support. If you do NOT have the carrying capacity to hold the fighters of any given system, then they count toward your fleet supply. They can be very useful for very cheap strikes against targets, or for setting up blocks for enemy ships.

Yssaril: Normally you will ALWAYS have to do something on your turn. Tactical Action, Transfer, Strategic, Racial Ability, Action Card "As An Action". The Yssaril Tribes may SKIP, which means they do none of the above. The benefits to doing this numerous. Example, you have selected Production this round. You want to ensure nobody else can use it and move their ships afterward. So you proceed to SKIP every opportunity you can, where everyone else must pass. Then you may activate Production and nobody else may move their ships around since they have passed. Or, you have the secret objective "Keeper of the Gates" and if you were to move into a wormhole early in the round people would know what you were doing. So you skip as much as you can so that you can go last and move your ships around after people have passed and can't stop you.

If the number of FT in a system exceeds support capacity, the extras count against fleet supply, 1 for 1. So if you had a carrier and 7 FT in a system, it would count as 2 ships for Fleet (the first 6 FT are supplied by the carrier and don't count.) If you had 2 FT all alone in a system with no docks or anything, it would also count as 2 Fleet, since the support capacity in system is currently zero.

Normally a player is required to take an Action each time his turn comes around. He cannot choose Pass until he used his SC and once he has chosen Pass he can't do anything else this turn. If a player runs out of Actions that he is able or willing to perform, then he MUST Pass (or use his SC if he hasn't already.)

The Yssaril can "Skip" as frequently as once every other action and thus extend their turn until other relevant opponents are done, as David describes. They can then act without fear of reprisal (at least until next turn, and that can be a world of difference.) This ability may not sound like much on paper, but it's actually quite powerful. The ability to wait and see what everyone else does before you start making any serious moves has huge strategic value. Knowing they can't hit you back right away is even bigger. Several people feel the Yssaril are overpowered because of this ability alone.

Awesome thanks alot both of you :)

Steve-O may have understated the power of the Yssaril skip ability. It is very very powerful. Game deciding powerful.

Being able to out wait everyone, at no cost, in the end game can't be overstated.

One of the running jokes we have in our play group is when the Yssaril Tribes actually pass before other races. Normally they are always last to pass. Last game I played on Saturday had the Yssaril Tribes. That player was one of the more effective Yssaril I've seen. He skipped very often and even remembered to look at other players' hand of action cards every round.
