COLOR v2 - Super Huge Detailed Map of the Warhammer Old World by Gitzman

By Gitzman, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Very interesting from my point of view are cities in Kislev. According to map Kislev is combination of Polish, Ukraine, Belarus and little bit of Russia.

Mainly Poland, so I can say a lot about it ofcourse.

Polish city names - Tczew, Koniecpole, Ostródy, Wojtaszyce, Plowce, Zabów, Blotno, Piast, Nidzica, Zwolen, Grunwald (later about Grunwald)

Not many of you probably know that Kislev is the third month of the civil year and the ninth month of the ecclesiastical year on the Hebrew calendar. In a regular (kesidran) year Kislev has 30 days, but because of the Rosh Hashanah postponement rules, in some years it can lose a day to make the year a "short" (chaser) year. Kislev is an autumn month which occurs in November–December on the Gregorian calendar and is sometimes known as the month of dreams. The name of the month may be taken from Akkadian kislimu, which means "inspissated, thickened" due to plentiful rains. But the name may also derive from the Hebrew root K-S-L as in the words "kesel, kisla" (hope, positiveness) or "ksil" (Orion, a constellation that shines especially in this month) - because the expectation and hope for rains.(wiki)

Now little background of Kislev (Polish kingdom?) cities of Grunwald and Nidzica.

Grunwald

The Battle of Grunwald or 1st Battle of Tannenberg was fought on 15 July 1410, during the Polish–Lithuanian–Teutonic War. The alliance of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, led respectively by King Jogaila (Wladyslaw Jagiello) and Grand Duke Vytautas (Witold), decisively defeated the Teutonic Knights, led by Grand Master Ulrich von Jungingen. Most of the Teutonic Knights' leadership were killed or taken prisoner. While defeated, the Teutonic Knights withstood the siege on their fortress in Marienburg! (Malbork) and suffered only minimal territorial losses at the Peace of Thorn (1411) (Torun). Territorial disputes continued until the Peace of Melno was concluded in 1422. However, the Knights never recovered their former power and the financial burden of war reparations caused internal conflicts and an economic downturn in their lands. The battle shifted the balance of power in Eastern Europe and marked the rise of the Polish–Lithuanian union as the dominant political and military force in the region.

The battle was one of the largest battles in Medieval Europe and is regarded as the most important victory in the history of Poland and Lithuania.

Funny thing is where Marienburg (Bretonia) and Malbork (Kislev) is on the map...

Very interesting =) I love the subtle connections Warhammer has to our world.

Regarding a full screen GoogleMaps version of the map, i do plan to do this. It is not that hard actually on my end, i just need to get the motivation to do it =). Proably an evenings worth or work, retweaking the style sheets to accomodate a larger, variable layout.

I'll post when its complete, probably within the next week or so.

I'll tie it into the launch of the v1.1 of the map which incorporates the upgaded Kislev, Sylvania and a variety of typos.

A full screen version of the map in GoogleMaps was posted to the site last night. Check it out. Great for iPads, or on TVs.

I for one have to print the map and put it in a frame and hang it on the wall in our gaming locale.
Just have to find a print shop with reasonable prices for the job.

Great! the fullscreen version is perfect to map long routes! despite the size is also fast enough in redrawing and rescaling...it works like a charm! happy.gif

Though I love the map and the work Gitzman has done I'm not quite sure if the distances given are quite right. I seem to recall that the Empire is much bigger than the same are would be in real world (as the planet of Warhammer itself is much bigger). This is something that I only have an opinion about and no guidelines to refer to.

When comparing to my official maps and the descriptions of travel in TTT it seems accurate.

Okay. Then it just must be me. Comparing the map to the one in TEW it seems to be in scale. It still seems an awful short amount of time to travel from Altdorf to Middenheim in under a week.

Doc,

The distance scaling was pretty tough to nail down. We worked on what was most likely a middle ground based on a variety of maps. Scaling is slightly different in different iterations of Warhammer maps and distance charts. So this is the best we could come up with that was close enough to work.

You will also notice that many older and newer maps do not line up geographically too, so it is highly probable that measurements over long and short distances can vary greatly from map to map.

So in summary, it's close enough =) lol. Glad you guys enjoy it.

Any plans to add Fauligmere, from Witch's Song to the map? Its two days towards the mouth of the Reik from Marienburg off the north shore, but the map in the books shows multiple locations (on purpose). Though all the possible locations look closer than two days to Marienburg.

awesome work sir. awesome

Yes i have added Fulgamire, Hugeldor and a whole slew of others in the v1.1 of the map. I'll post the map in a week or so when its complete.

There is a complete overhaul of Sylvania and a portion of Kislev as well.

Gitz

you know you`re great Gitz :D
