Shadows dupes

By Fieras, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

I know this has been covered, but I cant find it.

Tyrion (shadows) 1 in play, 1 in hand.

Are either of the 2 parts to play him as a dupe free? IE, can you play the dupe without it first going into shadows, or can you play him from shadows for free to dupe?

Does it matter which phase this occurs? Thanks.

When you are playing a duplicate, the card counts only as a duplicate and you would ignore the Shadows crest on the card. A more detailed explanation from ktom can be found www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_foros_discusion.asp

More specifically for this situation, you can dupe Tyrion by either method - directly from your hand (the Shadow crest, etc. make no difference as stated above) or by running the card through Shadows. Just keep in mind that when you decide to run the card through Shadows, you are using a "put into play" mechanic, not playing the duplicate. As such, there is no "cost savings." You'd have to pay Tyrion's full cost (2 to put the card into Shadows, another 2 to bring him out).

How do dupes work on situations when you take control of enemy characters?

For example, im my greyjoy deck, I frequently make people put cards from their deck into their discard pile. I have a card that can look at those cards discarded, and put a character into play for the phase. If, for example, I have theon in play, and I get them to discard theon. Does theon come into play as a dupe on my side? If so, does that mean that the dupe doesnt go away at the end of the phase?

Please clarify. Thanks.

If you take control of a character that already has a dupe on it, you get control of the dupe, too. (That's in the FAQ.)

The rules also state that you must own and control the cards you want to duplicate. So:

  • If an opponent takes control of a unique character you own, you cannot dupe it with another copy from your hand because you do not control the copy that is in play.
  • If you take control of an opponent's unique character, you cannot dupe it with another copy from your hand because you do not own the copy that is in play.
  • Similarly, if you have a copy of a unique in play, you cannot dupe it with an opponent's copy because you do not own the copy

In short, if you have a copy of Theon in play and they discard a copy of Theon from their deck, you would not be able to use River Raid on your opponent's copy of Theon. It is an illegal dupe (you do not own and control the card), so the rules on unique prevent you from putting into play a copy of a unique card you already have in play.

Based on that, I'm guessing that if two players control Reek, neither can trigger Reek's ability to exchange control of characters with each other. Even if it's Reek for Reek, right?

So I can have two Tyrion(kl) in the shadow at one time?

When the second comes out of shadow, It automaticly becomes a dup?

Shadows is an "out of play" area, so the restrictions on unique cards do not apply. As for bringing a second copy out of Shadows and into play as a dupe, that's covered in the thread already.
