find gate

Question: so if an elusive monster appears in an encounter, does nothing happen unless you pass the Evade check to fight it?

Right. You have to initiate the combat.

If an elusive monster surprises you, the combat ends without further effect, because you can't make an evade check (and thus initiate combat).

What does the unofficial FAQ says when an investigator is delayed, but sent to another loation by an encounter? Move or not move?

PS: making you sign a NDA for the FAQ is really weird... I still think this FAQ should have on the contrary been done in the form of a wiki, as a cooperative and open work. What are they afraid of? That working on clarifying the rules would lower the sales? Quite the contrary in my opinion.

I don't know what the UFAQ says, but it seems pretty clear to me: You move to the new location but are still delayed.

The only way for this to happen is that you're delayed during the movement phase (as per result of a failed combat check against a Child of the Goat, for example); nonetheless it's possible. I'm with Jhaelen on this issue. I'm pretty sure there is a FAQ saying something like "what happens if I'm delayed and an OW encounter instructs me to return to Arkham?" the answer was "you return to Arkham and are still delayed", so I believe the same is ok even for Arkham encounters

Also, there's nothing in the rules that tell you that Delayed means you can't move at all. Being delayed mearly stops your movement phase (essentially), but not actual movement outside of that. For example if a gate opens up and you're delayed, you still get sucked through the gate.

What exactly is the concept of being delayed in the storyline element of the game?

Yep, elusive monsters move regardless of the presence of an investigator in their spot. I didn't mention them simply because I think HPL is playing with the base game only, thus I didn't want to mess his ideas mentioning monsters from expansions

THANK YOU

A lot of the Great Old Ones on this forum can't seem to help themselves but to point out every expansion-based exception to a newbie's rules question.

HINT HINT

What's that you're hinting? That I should point out more expansion-based exceptions? Hmm... If you insist :'D

::Shrug:: the reason why I do is that not all Newbies only have the base game or aren't playing with friends who don't just have the base game. But yes, I realize the information can be irrelevant.

Yeah... But it is what it is...

Well I'd rather omit expansion-relevant conditions to save a newbie from confusion, than include every possible instance. Often, the expansion-based exceptions actually say that they're exceptions.

Well I suppose that, on occasion, battling with supernatural forces and beings from the underworld can sometimes take a little longer than you intended.

Usually the encounter that delayed you is self explanatory:

"The door slams shut behind you! Spend a turn delayed as you search for another way out."

If a gate opens on you during an encounter/mythos then being delayed would be that you are disorientated. Think of it as the difference between diving into water with the intention to swim, as opposed to being unexpectedly pushed into the water.

Depends on what delays you. Sometimes you're lost in a labyrinth of tunnels in the black cave, other times you read a lot of important papers at the library, you're in jail, etc. The encounter cards that delay you give you a reason for it, and the monster that delays you (from an expansion) is busy having freaky-deaky sex with you. Essentially, it's just something that's time consuming.

And to expand on the analogy, in Arkham, water jumps into you! Okay, so maybe not...but I imagine if I blink and was suddenly in an Australian desert, I'd be "delayed" in essence...Even more so if I was in a place I couldn't comprehend, like, say, an M. C. Escher painting

And if you're delayed by a Child of the Goat.... well it never explains the cause of it, but one could infer what it does. gran_risa.gif

Forces you to play Monopoly. Or if she's really sick and twisted, Axis and Allies.

And she makes you play Axis. It's just not fair! They never win!

I've won with Axis (on my first game too). I completely humiliated the game owner. It was fun.

Mark Harrigan on the other hand..

He finds his way out of the cave faster than no-one else.
He reads important papers faster than you can imagine.
He.. only has quickies?

He's twice as fast because he thinks he's twice as good (the card warned you that he had low sanity).

"C'mon big boy, let's have some good ol' fashioned freak-show fun!"

"Sorry doll, I ain't got no time for that..."

Though what he's doing failing a combat check against a Child of the Goat, I have no idea...

Which is the problem with that monster. Cute ability, but in practice you just squash em like bugs.

Clearly he chose not to use his flamethrower.

Agreed. Though in theory it might surprise a weaponless investigator in an Other World ::eyeroll:: because I always send weaponless investigators to Other Worlds.

just to clarify :

- if you are delayed in Outher world you cannot cast spell find gate cause you are delayed

BUT

-if you are delayed and you have encounter (move to other location and have encounter there) that is O.K. ?
