Need advice on my Night's Watch deck.

By bktanner, in 4. AGoT Deck Construction

Hey guys,

I am new to the A Game of Thrones LCG. I've read the series, and my favorite characters are the Starks, and more specifically the Night's Watch guys. So before I even got the game, I knew I wanted to make a Night's Watch deck ASAP. I've played with the core set decks about 10 times now, so I figured it was time to start doing some deck building.

I went ahead and bought a lot of the battlepacks after playing several games and deciding I really like the gameplay.

Here is a list of what I have to work with (this list is static, it won't be changing any time soon):

2 x Core set
1 x Lords of Winter
1 x Kings of the Storm
1 x Wolves of the North
1 x Beyond the Wall
1 x A Sword in the Darkness
1 x The Wildling Horde
1 x A King in the North
1 x Return of the Others
1 x Refugees of War
1 x Ancient Enemies
1 x Sacred Bonds

I mostly play joust with my girlfriend. I want to play more melee. I played my first melee match the other night and am trying to get my Magic: The Gathering friends into this game =D.

Also, I will only be playing casually. I won't be playing in tournaments or anything like that.

With those constraints, can you guys give me any advice on helping me tweak my Night's Watch deck.

Here is my first draft of the deck:

House Card: Stark

Agendas:
The Rangers
The Builders
The Stewards

Plot cards:
Building Season
Summoning Season
The Power of Arms
At the Wall
The Minstrel's Muse
Fear of Winter
Respect of the Old Gods

Characters (28):
3 x Ranger of the Watch
1 x StoneSnake
1 x Stannis Baratheon (+1 to NW version)
2 x Master Aemon
2 x Jon Snow (core set version)
1 x Old Bear Mormont
3 x Lost Ranger
3 x Builder of the Watch
1 x Recruiter of the Watch
3 x Defenders of the North
3 x Steward of the Watch
1 x Wolves of the North
2 x Ghost (core set version)
2 x Benjen Stark (core set version)

Attachements (7):
3 x Deep Freeze
1 x Longclaw
3 x Winter Cache

Events (13):
2 x Feast of Crows
2 x Yoren's Task
3 x The Sword in the Darkness
2 x King's in the North
2 x Lethal Counterattack
2 x Winter is Coming

Locations (13):
1 x Winterfell
1 x The Wall
1 x The Shadow Tower
1 x Castle Black
1 x Northern Fiefdoms
1 x Street of Steel
2 x Crossroads
3 x Great Keep
1 x Lord Eddard's Chamber

I figured with needing the extra power, this deck would be slow. So I have 3 2 claim plot cards in the plot deck to help gain power faster. In addition, the Winter is Coming will help raise the claim on some of my other cards. The Minstrel's Muse combined with Kings in the North will hopefully net me a bunch of power in one turn. Finally, Deep Freeze will hopefully slow my opponent down, making them need to collect more power as well.

Like I said, I am super newbie to AGOT, I am not sure how viable of a deck this is. However, as stated above I am not looking to play in any tournaments, just play for funsies =D. Any help will be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi, i am a new player too, and I was trying to build a deck with NW and as many others have noticed it runs better with Baratheon. (Stannis, The Baratheon version of The Wall)

However since you dont want Baratheons... you should try the combo of Samwell - Ravens - Winter. I am not sure if you have the cards for this winter - sam subtheme but it is vary fun to play. You get Sam with Yoren's Task and With a Time of Ravens plot you fetch a White Raven to bring WInter on the board. With 3 White Ravens and with 3 Carrion Birds (with their recycling ability) you can draw almost every round 2 more cards which speeds your deck.

Just my thoughs... :)

If you find you are having difficulties getting all the extra power you need from the 3 Agendas, you may want to consider using only 2 of them and switching the character set a bit to emphasize whichever icon all your NW characters don't have. Core Jon Snow, for example, already has some icons...

Good initial decklist considering your limited card pool. I have a few suggestions though...

Draw: It looks like you don't have a lot of draw in your deck and that you're probably primarily drawing only the normal 2 cards each turn. I would try to add some more draw effects to speed up your deck. I don't know how you feel about mixing themes (Wildlings with your Night's Watch), but 1x Val (from Return of the Others) is an excellent card to supplement draw. Guards at Riverrun (from Lords of Winter) is also an excellent source of draw, and I would actually add 3x that card if you can find a way to fit it in.

Characters: It looks like your cost curve might be on the higher side...can you squeeze in some low-cost Stark characters? Shaggydog (1x), Hodor (1x), Bolton Refugees (3x), and Jojen (1x) would all be great additions. Again, if you prefer to run Night's Watch almost exclusively, then adding these might not be that thematic. On the other hand, this will speed up your deck quite a bit by reducing the gold curve so that you have fast setups and can play the cards you draw more quickly. Arya Stark would also be a good addition, since she can steal renown to help you win faster (and prevent the opponent from winning faster by claiming renown).

In terms of what to cut, I find Deep Freeze, Winter Cache, and Castle Black to be pretty unhelpful most of the time. I usually would rather have an extra character (low-cost characters like Hodor might be nice) than an attachment. Castle Black is OK, but doesn't usually work out as efficiently for me as a Street of Steel or Street of Sisters. Feast of Crows also seems like a card cut. You don't play a ton of influence (nor should you just for this card), so the event won't typically help you if you draw it in the first 1-3 rounds. In fact, if you cut the copies of Feast of Crows, you can swap out your Crossroads for two more Northern Fiefdoms, which are MUCH more efficient. (If you're worried about too many "Limited" locations, I would still cut the Feast of Crows and swap out the Crossroads for a Street of Steel and Street of Sisters. I honestly think Crossroads is somewhat inefficient, as it takes two full rounds to pay for itself.) This way, you can open up a bit more space for characters to improve the overall deck efficiency.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I will probably use a lot of those suggestions, cut some of these cards and add some cheaper cost ones. I can still forsee this deck being too slow though, having to get 6 extra power seems like quite a lot =D.

Given that alot of his characters have no icons I'm not sure switching these in would help alot.
