Character change owneship and Loyal Guard Question

By Yusaku, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

2 quick questions... i searched the first 10 pages but didn't found an answer:

1) If a character chenge ownership lets say via the plot card: Fury of the Stag, does he looses attachments, powers, duplicates and standing/kneeling position?

2) In order to play Loyal Guard as an duplicate, you have to pay 2 gold pieces or since it is duplicate can be played for free??

Thank you! :))

1) Character changes as is

2)duplicates are free.

First, nothing ever changes ownership. You always own the cards you brought to the game. Cards can change control, though, which is what you are really talking about.

When a card changes control, the only thing that changes is who controls the card. Is there any particular reason or rule that makes you think it would, stand, kneel, lose attachments, etc.?

More generally, in this game, unless a card or rule says you can or should do something, you cannot. So since there is no card effect or rule saying "discard attachments and kneel a character if is switches control," you don't do it. If something is supposed to change, it would say so somewhere.

In the FAQ: (3.25) Taking Control of
a Card With Attachments
Any time control of a card switches via a card
effect during a game, the new controlling player
gains control of said card and all duplicates.
Unless specified in game text, the new controlling
player does not gain control of any attachments
on said character.

Lets say someone took controll of my Pit Viper which had a Bronze Shield on it. Since I am still the controller of the attachment at a later point in the game can I kill the Pit Viper when my apponent plays an event?

The bronze shield only checks for control when I play it not once it is in play. And the in play effect is a response: After an apponent plays an event card kill attached character to cancel the effects of that event.

If my card says something like "Discard a
Wildling character to kill a Night’s Watch…"
can I discard any Wildling character in play?

Discarding the Wildling character is a cost,
and you can only pay for a cost with cards that
you control.

Same deal in your Pit Viper/Bronze Shield scenario. In order to pay the cost for the Shield's effect, you would have to kill the attached character. But since you do not control the attached character, you are not allowed to use it to pay the cost. You have to control both the card whose effect you are triggering and any card needed to pay the cost of the effect.

(3.20) Attachment Restrictions
Any attachment that has a restriction (such as
"Lord or Lady only" or "attach to an opponent's
character"
) is immediately discarded
from play at any time that restriction is not
met, regardless of immunity. Such restrictions
are constant effects, and the attachment should
be immediately discarded any time a restriction
is not met including during setup.

So the whole point is moot for this scenario anyway because Bronze Shield will be discarded if you lose control of the attached character.

Ah I see. Thanks again Ktom. It may take me 5 years but I will learn all the little twist and turns of this great game one day. Who knows, maybe the next book will be out by then ;-)
