Assassin

By Asmuth, in WFRP Rules Questions

Hello, I have a player whose original career was a thug. She's interested in becoming an assassin. I'm a little confused by the keywords here, I understand how to figure out the experience cost. My confusion is the assassin is an "advanced" career, I know this means that it can't possibly be taken at character generation (only basic careers can), but I'm not sure if it means anything beyond that. My confusion mainly comes from the fact that there are other careers that are not basic, but are "intermediate". Most non-basic careers list specific requirements to get into them, the assassin does not.

In short, does the advanced/intermediate mean anything beyond you can't pick them at the start (do you have to go basic, intermediate, advanced; or be a specific rank to take an intermediate/advanced)? If so or if there are any rules about these at all, could you point me in the direction and to which book they're in.

Hi,

Players cant take an advanced career until they reach rank 2 (ie 10 exp). Then they can calculate the amount of exp to make the transition based on the number of matching traits. Its worth checking each advanced career individually as some have specific entry requirements beyond that (acolyte, disciple, witch hunter, etc)

Have fun

Where is this in the books?

p.140 in the PG.

By deduction from the listed Careers, we know that Witch Hunter Captain, Wizard and Priest are Rank 3 Careers at the minimum, they need Witch Hunter, Disciple & Acolyte to be completed before which are all Intermediate ones. We could deduce that "Advanced" trait for a Career is Rank 3 requirement (Priest, Wizard, Assassin, Witch Hunter Captain). Intermediate for Rank 2 minimum.

The Elite Trait (only the Prophet of Doom for now) would be a Rank 4 then.

Is this stated anywhere other than the PG? I have all the original books and haven't bought the players guide because of this. Not sure if it's something they clarified there. What your saying makes sense, and is kind of what I had deduced, was hoping for something written to back me up, but will likely do it that way regardless.

p140 in the PG is just the start of listing Careers with a couple paragraphs, distinguishing Basic from Advanced Careers without differencing Intermediate, Advanced & Elite. It is meant in this page as Basic vs non-Basic Careers. But the deduction from above should be enough (Priest needs Acolyte finished, thus Rank 3, etc.)

Just to be clear, the Players Guide doesn't say anything about rankings and careers (in relation to intrmediate, advanced, elite). This is the only two sentences on it on page 140 ...

"The careers herein are presented beginning with basic careers and proceeding to advance careers on page 167. They are sorted alphabetically within those two categories." This is followed by a list of basic careers players can start with.

So even though I generally go by what Cwell2101 is saying, there is really no clear ruleing on it. You have to decide for yourself ... does the fact that a few careers go basic, intermediate, advance, elite mean that everyone does? probably.

This might help ... page 47, Player's Guide ...

"A character may not enter an advanced career until he has achieved rank 2. Individual advanced careers may be have further requirements, such as requiring the character to complete a certain career, but in general it is not required for a character to have completed any basic careers before transitioning into an advanced career. He must simply have gained the ten experience necessary to become rank 2"

Thanks Gully, both for the clarification and the additional rule. That's exactly what I was looking for.

I don't think this is actually written down anywhere, but it is internally consistent and it seems like a plausible way to go. Good break down!
